It's interesting that at the Quebec Summerskate, PARADIS / OUELLETTE were placed ahead of POULIN / SERVANT even though IMO POULIN / SERVANT had better programs and are the better skaters. But P/O had to win because they are going to Skate Canada, and P/S don't have any international assignments as yet (even though they beat Hawayek/Baker in the FS at Lake Placid).

A lot of these local summer comps are set up so that the 'right' teams win, sort of a pat-on-the-back sendoff. OTOH, the Lake Placid competition is an international competition and the scores are a lot less inflated. Many of the ice dance competitors at Quebec had skated at Lake Placid and some gained 15-20 points or more in just a week's time.

I have found over the years the Que summer competition notorious for bumping marks to their top teams to either get them assignments or pump them up going into one (even worse than other section competitions). Often these marks are never seen again this season. This is why I didn't like them separating out the competitors this year as judges look like they automatically gave higher second marks to those international assigned canadian skaters.

Yes, I noticed that brand new pair team Purich / Wolfe outscored brand new pair Castelli / Tran in the SP even though Purich had a clumsy fall. Yes, both are new teams, butCastelli and Tran are from experienced SENIOR teams who have competed at World championships; just on presentation alone, Castelli and Tran should have been ahead.

Also, I couldn't believe that Veronik Mallet got 55.40 for a SP that consisted of 3t+2t, 3f↓, 2a and 107.18 for this FS: 3f, 3ze↓, 3lo+2t+2lo, 3lo, 3t+2t, 3t, 2a^2a

Meanwhile, the Junior Ladies winner Selena Zhao (who recently switched from the US to Canada) and who is going to the JGP, but wasn't put in the International group, got these marks:

SP 51.79 3f+3t<, 3z, 2a
FS 102.75 2a+3t, 3f+2t, 3lo, 3z+2t+2lo, 3fe, 3z, 3s

Zhao's presentation is superb, but went unrecognized in this competition. She can do all the hard jumps and can skate clean. When she moves up to senior she will be a threat to Osmond and Daleman---if she is scored fairly.

Edwards/Pang just skated their SD at the BC Summerskate. She had a huge stumble right in front of the judges but they still gave them a score of 53.90 --- higher than any junior team got at Lake Placid, of course!

E/P skate next week in Courchevel. Maybe they should have had another prep, eh?

Perhaps Madeline is beginning to outgrow Zhao Kai? He really struggled with that third lift in their FD.

E/P were second to the Russians Loboda / Drozd. They should have gone to Lake Placid. They needed another prep!

Congrats on the silver! But they really needed to up the difficulty on their step sequences, especially their diagonal which has been nailed with level 1's both at SummerSkate and Courchevel.

So apparently Zhao Kai Pang is in my metabolism class. He was in Aichi when we had a test and the next Monday, the prof showed their program to the class (though she actually pulled out the wrong video, Courcheval instead of Aichi). Everyone was super impressed by the lifts.
