How's this for a new scoring system?

With all the debate about the CoP vs. the 6.0 system, I gave some thought about which system would be better--just for fun. I ended up coming up with a system that combines certain elements for both while being pretty easy to understand (I think, at least).

So here it is:

The judges awards points (on a traditional scale of 0-6.0) for six different elements:

TECHNICAL (i.e.)= 30%
ARTISTIC = 30%
SPEED = 10%
SPINS = 10%
STEP SEQ's = 10%
SPIRALS = 10%

TOTAL = 100%

Now how would this system work? Let me show you using Tara Lipinski and Michelle Kwan's long programs in the '94 Olympics.

..............................TARA................MICHELLE
TECHNICAL...............5.9 (x 3)...........5.7 (x 3)
ARTISTIC...................5.7 (x 3)...........5.8 (x 3)
SPEED....................6.0...................5.6
SPINS.....................5.6...................5.7
STEP SEQ's.............5.6...................5.7
SPIRALS..................5.6...................5.8

TOTALS..................57.80................57.30

(* Any tied programs would be broken by the TECHNICAL mark--just my personal preference)

The good thing about the program is that it's quite transparent. By looking at the skater's total, you can see what his or her average score was on the different elements. For example, you can look at Tara's score of 57.80 and know that she scored an average of 5.78. I also think the system rewards a well-rounded program, as opposed to programs skewed too heavily toward jumps OR just artistry.

The same system could be used for the short program. The only change would be that the total scores would be divided by two, so that the long program would count twice as much as the short program.

Anyways, I had a fun time scoring some of my all-time favorite programs and seeing which ones scored the highest. It turned out to be Michelle Kwan's Lyra Angelica at the U.S. Nationals, followed by Kristi Yamaguchi at the '92 Nationals.

................................MICHELLE.................KRISTI
TECHNICAL.................5.8 (x 3)..................5.8 (x 3)
ARTISTRY...................5.9 (x 3).................5.9 (x 3)
SPEED......................5.8.........................5.8
SPINS.......................5.8.........................5.8
STEP SEQ's...............5.8.........................5.7
SPIRALS....................5.9.........................5.7

TOTALS.....................58.40......................58.10

And here's what would've happened to the whole Oksana vs. Nancy debate under my system (using my subjective scores of course).

..................................OKSANA....................NANCY
TECHNICAL..................5.5 (x 3)...................5.8 (x 3)
ARTISTRY...................5.9 (x 3)...................5.8 (x 3)
SPEED......................5.8...........................5.7
SPINS.......................5.9...........................5.7
STEP SEQ's...............5.8...........................5.7
SPIRALS....................5.7...........................5.8

TOTALS.....................57.40.......................57.70

I always said Nancy should have won, ha ha ha. Anyways, the point of this system was just for fun, lest someone get all worked up and offended for whatever reason.

Anyways, what do you guys think?

It's funny your system always ensures your favorites. Bravo:)

Well yeah - but that's been true for the official judges since forever ;)

huh? What makes you think you know who my favorites are??? I would have loved to see Michelle beat Tara for the gold medal. That night, however, I thought Tara's performance WAS better. But if I have a favorite skater, it's Michelle, no doubt about it.

Or we could just use my roommates scoring system

1 point if he likes your music
-1 if he doesn't
1 point if he likes your costume
-1 if he doesn't
1 point for each cool looking move you do
-1 point each time you fall.

No joke he does that. He never watched skating before we were roommates but everytime I watch it he automaticall says -1 or 1 point when he sees the costumes. LOL
