Article mainly talks about Meryl/Charlie as grand marshals of a NASCAR race in Michigan and they taught one of the drivers how to skate. There is a video of Meryl and Charlie teaching the NASCAR driver, Austin Dillon, who is decent on the ice by the way.

Hidden gems from the article worth noting:

Charlie/Tanith set a date and are getting married in April of 2015.

Meryl admits that she is single (confirmation that she a) broke up from boyfriend she was admitting to earlier in the year and b) not dating Maks) but as usual is cagey with details.

They are still deciding what to do after this season (have not retired or ruled out future competition) and want to spend time away (thus the year off) to figure out if they have competitive fire in the tank before they do another Olympic quad.

 How cool that the NASCAR driver is into figure skating. Meryl and Charlie are still getting at lot of local exposure here in Michigan.

Really the two of them should go into PR. They are absolute geniuses at answering difficult questions in a way that no one could be offended. That's a rare talent.

Fandom collision!

But I would like to say: You guys would get very peeved if NASCAR fans were referring to, say, Charlie as "the skating guy". Please afford Austin the same courtesy. He is not "the NASCAR guy", he is Austin Dillon, an extremely talented young man who is in his first season of Sprint Cup after coming up from Nationwide. He finished 15th at Pocono last night which is not bad for a rookie.

Good for Austin. But I would be fine with Charlie White being called "the skating guy" by a bunch of auto racing enthusiasts.

I would too. It's not realistic to expect non-fans to know the names of people in a 'fandom' (word fandom used loosely because to me it means something different than what I want it to mean here). I know the names of NO racers and am not ashamed of that. Similarly, I don't think racing fans should be ashamed of not knowing Charlie's name or need to know it. At the end of the day a person can only be expected to know what interests them, and some wide basic facts like what day of the week it is and who the president currently is in their country.

What a charming article! I especially love how proud Meryl and Charlie are of coming from Michigan. Isn't it great that they have been able to train in their home state, so they could identify so strongly with it in all aspects of their lives.

Perhaps not. But is it totally out of the realms of reasonable expectation to think that, since his name is not complicated and was mentioned a couple of times in the article that people are talking about (therefore right there for reference), people might refer to him by his name?

Point taken. I added Austin's name to the first post. Btw, it is still possible that he will qualify for The Chase in this his rookie year, which is NASCAR's version of the playoffs. He is definitely a promising rookie.

Yes, though he will likely need to win a race soon if he wants to stay top 13. Wins count for a lot and he's in a bunch of very good drivers who haven't won yet this season for whatever reason. Particularly since the next race is Watkins Glen, a road course, which always shakes things up a bit and which Ambrose is odds-on favourite to win.

Fwiw, Kyle Busch won Watkins Glen last year, and Tony Stewart has the most wins, 5, at Watkins, so I wouldn't say Ambrose was that prohibitively favored. It's not like he wins all the road course events. He finished eighth at Sonoma this year. He did win at The Glen in 2012 and 2011, so I might have him as the favorite, too, just not overwhelmingly so. However, I doubt Dillon will get his first win there. Perhaps on the 17th in Michigan.

A decent car is always an advantage, of course, and it's not one Marcos has enjoyed for quite a while. But there can be no doubt that he is a superior road course specialist, and he'll always be in the mix at The Glen.

Austin winning in Michigan would be quite a treat.

Thank you for the link. Sounds like they are keeping their options open for a run at another Olympic games.

Yes, Richard Petty Racing, afair is a Ford shop, and gets its engines from Roush-Yeats. This year Ambrose is its highest placed driver in the standings, and he is behind Austin Dillon. They don't seem to have produced a good car under this year's design rules for him. But you're right, he's the best road course driver in NASCAR right now.
