"Skater dress" as fashion trend for street clothes

I probably am the last to learn of this trend, which came to my attention when news anchor Tamron Hall gushed about this style on the Today show this morning.
For anyone else interested, video is at the link below. (And an excerpt of the accompanying text story is below.)

3 ways to transition Tamron's favorite skater dresses into a fall fashion

It sounds like something your teenager or an ice skater would wear, but the "skater dress" may be the easiest way to infuse versatility and style into your wardrobe with one simple purchase.

Think of the dress as a more modern version of a classic A-line dress with a shorter hemline.

Skater dresses typically have a a fitted bodice and a skirt that flares out at your natural waist, essentially mimicking the look of the letter "A".

Lately, this style has been hugely popular with designers, style bloggers and celebrities, and it's easy to see why. The shape flatters almost any body type and it's the perfect transitional piece that can take you from summer to fall.

About as flattering as skinny jeans. As in not. Maybe 1 in 100 will look good wearing this style...

While the ones in the link won't work for everyone, the A-line silhouette does compliment most figures. You just have to make sure you have the appropriate length and volume for the skirt.

Exactly. A-line is fine, but when it's a butt-curtain length then.......noooo

"butt-curtain length"

Fabric is also an issue when it comes to the volume of the skirt. Stiffer fabrics (sorry, can't think of an example offhand) are much less forgiving and can make you look bigger. Also, the fuller the skirt, the more length needed, IMO. That is, unless you're built like a gymnast, which I most certainly am not.
