NRW Trophy 2014 Singles & Pair Skating

LIVESTREAM
http://nrw-trophy.de/livestream.html

When:

November 26th – November 30th 2014

Location:

Eissportzentrum Westfahlen / Strobelallee 32, 44139 Dortmund, Germany

Tickets:

TBA (usually around 50 Euro for an All Event), you can order them in advance and then pick them up at the Ice Rink. I will inform you about the prices and procedure once I know more.

How to reach:

From the main trainstation just take U45 until Westfahlenhallen. From there its just a small walk of about 5-10 minutes. There is a large parking area too, so if you come by car you can leave it there.

Side note:

The practice rink is outside, but easily accessible and covered by a roof. There is also a small "restaurant" inside where you can eat & drink. The event itself has a very cozy atmosphere and some of the best figure skaters in the world were already on the Ice there including Yuna Kim, Brian Joubert or Aljona & Robin. During the 4 days of competition pairs, ladies and men will compete in all age groups including juniors, novice and advanced.

Accommodation:

There are quite a few hotels nearby, I have picked a few that I used before - room prices range from 60-120 Euro a night.

Low Budget

A: Bed&Breakfast - Wittekindstraße 106 Dortmund (Walking Distance about 10-15 minutes)

This Hotel offers single, double, triple and family rooms for up to 4 members. The breakfast is usually served around 7-10 AM, it is very good but must be paid extra on arrival. ( 7.50 Euro each ) The rooms are a bit noisy, but skating fans don't spend much time in them anyways. If you come by car, you can use the free parking service directly at the hotel (first come - first serve) - if you arrive very late it can happen that you wont find a free spot.

In case you prefer traveling without a car, then it is also very easy to reach by using the local "Stadtbahn", which departs from the main trainstation (Dortmund Hauptbahnhof), just look for the big blue U and board the tram with the number 45 until Stadtgarten, where you change into the U 42 in direction (Hormbuch) and leave at the Theodor Fliedner Heim. The Hotel is just across the street.

Room price is 70-80 Euro a Night.

Medium Budget

A: Hotel Gildenhof - Hohe Str. 139 Dortmund (Walking Distance about 10 - 15 minutes)

This Hotel is run by a local family, therefore it offers a different experience than of a big hotel company. The staff is very friendly and usually has some time to chat if you want to know more about Dortmund, like some tips for sightseeing etc. Breakfast is 9 Euro and tastes very good, they also have a restaurant offering typical German Food. The hotel offers single and double rooms and can easily be reached by "Stadtbahn", take number 45 at Dortmund main station and leave at "Westfahlenhallen", from there it is a 10 minute walk.

Room price is 80 Euro for Single and 100 for double.

B: Steigenberger - Berswordtstraße 2, Dortmund (Walking Distance 10 minutes)

Compared to Gildenhof this is the total opposite, a very large complex building, with fitness rooms, solarium, special food service (for those with a diet) etc. What I always loved about Steigenberger is the room service, you just order your breakfast in the evening and they bring it to your room. Very nice for those that like to sleep long and prefer eating in bed. Parking fee is 12 Euro a day and you don't need to book those in advance. Rooms are quite big, you usually have a table and some chairs, so that you can do some work like me writing an article about the NRW Trophy
The hotel also offers a terrace where you can take a seat, WLan does cost a fee and lunch packet´s can be ordered as well.

Again you can reach the hotel by taking U45 until "Westfahlenhallen". You should be able to see the hotel after going up the stairs.

Room Price is 70 - 120 Euro a Night.

Comfort:

A: Best Western Parkhotel Strobelallee 41 Dortmund (Walking Distance 5 minutes)

While the most expensive hotel, it also is the closest to the ice rink. Its just 5 minutes and can as well be reached by taking the U45 from the Dortmund main station. The hotel does offer room service including breakfast, a pool, massage´s, steam bath etc. Wlan is free, money exchange possible and you can even book a suite for 250 Euro. I have been in different rooms there, some were really small but also a lot cheaper, while others more expensive and larger. After checking their website today, I did not find any offers for those cheaper rooms, so either they are already sold out or no longer available at the hotel.

Room Price is 110 - 250 Euro a Night.

More infos will come as soon they are published by the organizing committee.

In the past few years we had some great skaters at Dortmund. Most of you will remember Yuna Kim or Brian Joubert but also Vera & Yuri or Robin & Aljona were here. The deadline for the sign ups is the 1.st of November so we will most likely see the official line ups after that day.

What I personally like a lot about NRW is the Juniors bracket and the "advanced" one. It offers the chance to see a lot of young skaters and its a very friendly and family like environment ;)

Oh? Why are you concerned about this? ;)

Btw. Since you love Ice Dancing so much, http://ice-dancing.nrw-trophy.de/ this should be very interesting for you too ;)

I am concerned because I generally watch on an Android tablet or a phone, and flash player is not supported.

You can manually install flash player on Android devices via the adobe.com website, even if it is not available in the Google Playstore anymore (it might not work if your Android version is higher than 4.0). http://www.helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/installing-flash-player-android-devices.html is the official step by step guide.
Or you can try the Puffin web browser which supports flash and can be download from the Google Playstore.

I went to the trouble to do something like this once before with the Dolphin browser- and as soon as Adobe updated flashplayer again, three months later, my bandaid no longer worked.

It is ultimately easier to break out the laptop and watch there, or to wait for youtubes.

The entries are online now,

http://www.lev-nrw.org/docs/event/1404/index.htm

A few names are,

Andrej Zuber, Fleur Maxwell, Kerstin Frank, Isabelle Olsson, Seidi Rantanen & Lutricia Bock, Maria Chuzhanova / Denis Mintsev (junior pairs), Annika Hocke; Kalina Lewicka and Emmi Peltonen (Junior Ladies), Matyas Belohradsky (Junior Men).

Besides that there is also a young lady called Essi Korpi, she however isn't related to Kiira as far I know

I did sadly not spot any North American athletes :( but many new names that I have not seen before so this should still be very interesting to watch :agree:

The timetable looks as follows now,

Nice to see Matyas Belohradsky in the junior men's category.

Majorov has already been removed, unsurprisingly.

There is also a Jiri Belohradsky entered in both Junior Men and Pairs, is he a brother of Matyas?

Anastasia Gubanova in Advanced Novice ladies. Alex D, if you have the patience to sit through novice ladies, definitely make a point to watch her.

I am not going to miss anyone, I promise :D

My patience is endless, there is a colleague of mine and we always joke around about who of us spent the night at the ice rink as we are both so dedicated to the sport and watch just everything.

I am very curious about the event and I am sure I will find the one or the other story that I can include in my column of the whole year 2014 including Sochi. ;)

Of course I will also keep you up to date with the event at Dortmund ;)

Alright folks,

for those who want to come over here are the ticket details, right from the OC.

I was told that tomorrow costs 5,- Euro, every other day 10,- Euro. You also don't need to be afraid of a sold out like with Yuna Kim once. I was promised that everyone who comes over will get in, so there are plenty of tickets available for you.

Competition tomorrow will start at 10.00 CET (04.00 AM Eastern / 18.00 Japan / 20.00 Australian Eastern Daylight), with the Basic Novice Girls. There will also be live commentary by Daniel Hermann and Dominique Dieck on the stream ;)

Any questions? Then shoot ;)
