Mike Weiss Blades!!!

Hey everyone!:p
You've proberly already heard of the new FREEDOM BLADE Mike Wiess is using, but i was just wondering if any of you, has tried it or heard anything else about it?? I mean, isn't it easier to fall on you butt when you do hard jumps because there's no edge to save you?? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/grin.gif ALT=" >D">

please post a comment to this topic!

Re: Mike Weiss Blades!!!

As far as I can tell, the main part of the blade is the same as a regular blade. The length and shape etc are the same. The obvious difference on the Freedom is that the back of the blade goes up. However, the length of blade on the ice isn't altered I don't think, they've just got an extra bit sticking up that means they can skate on their heels.

I'm just a little curious Benji,

Why do you feel they will improve your basic skating?

These blades are no different than a regular blade in all respects but for the ends, which are only good for the "trick" Michael does, skating on his heels. They won't improve your jumps at all. What are you using now?

Benji-
Mike Weiss's blades just let him do more tricks on the back of the blade. Instead of the edge stopping at the back they just continue up so they are rounded. The blade still has two edges. I don't think they will improve your skating, so I would just stick with what is working for you.

Re: Mike Weiss Blades!!!

From watching Michael Weiss skate at worlds, with that fall he had on the 3 lutz in the short, I almost think that fall would've been avoided if he had normal blades. He was far back on his blade on the landing, and I think that the rounded edge on the back of the blade aided in his fall. This may just be my opinion, but with the rounded edge at the end of the blade, you'd no longer be able to squeak out jumps landed far back on your heel, because there's nothing there to save you. Sure they add more possibilities choreographically, but would they really be worth it if they hinder your jumping abilities?

I am surprised they are legal. The ISU has so many rules and regulations. The seemed to sanction these new blades without and hoop la at all.

As far as I'm concerned, the "Freedom Blade" is a classic case of "much ado about nothing". The so-called move that Michael Weiss performs by standing on the back blades is, quite frankly, herky-jerky, and does absolutely nothing to enhance the choreography or the program. What a waste!!

Now if Michael Weiss could only learn to master all of his jumps and skate some clean programs -- that would impress me!!

Those blades are made for skating and they'll skate all over you.;)

Joe, Are you joking about the skates "skating all over me?" Who do you think you're kidding, anyway? Get real!!!

Re: Mike Weiss Blades!!!

Maybe Michael Weiss can do a split on the freedom blades - at least as far as the legs can be stretched. I say, "Ouch!!"

I'm thinking of the last time I watched the "Nutcracker" on television -- one of the toys that came to life strutted around with a lot of squatting moves -- the legs extended with bent legs, etc. That's probably something Weiss could do on the freedom blades.

Ugh -- again, "Much ado about nothing". :x

Re: Mike Weiss Blades!!!

I'm still waiting for Michael to do heel spins, like you do on regular roller skates.

Re: Mike Weiss Blades!!!

I am also waiting for heel spins. That would add technical content and a new avenue for skating.

A younger man (early 20s) at a rink where I skate bought a pair of these. He has been skating on them for a couple of months and is an advanced skater. However, he fell backward on them and split his chin open. Yuck.

Re: Mike Weiss Blades!!!

Perhaps Michael Weiss could have a move named after him if he invents something truly "memorable" that can be performed on the freedom blades. There was the "Hamill Camel"....hmm.
what rhythmes with Weiss??
