In the latest issue of International Figure Skating (June 2004) the first four letters to the editor are from fans wanting more features about their favorite skaters. The editor responds:
"Michelle Kwan has not been available for [photo shoots and interviews]. An upcoming cover has been offered to Michelle through her management. We have yet to receive a answer."
"Several interview requests have been submitted to Sarah Hughes by IFS. She has declined them all."
"nterview requests [to Tara Lipinski] have not received replies."
"[Ilia Kulik] has declined all interview requests presented to him by ISF, including the offer of a cover for himself and his wife, Ekaterina Gordeeva."
Is something going on here? This is show biz, after all; why wouldn't these skaters want to be on the cover of a famous trade magazine? Even Sarah, who is out of skating for the time being, has many fans who want to read about her.
Do skaters regard these interviews as intrusions into their privacy? Are they too busy? Do they have something against IFS publisher Mark Lund?
Inquiring minds want to know.
