I love Emily Chan's short program. She's leading after the short. Had some issues with my IceNetwork stream, so I missed most of what looked like a beautiful skate from Akari Nakahara. :p

Emily Chan looked amazing. She had nice stretch in her limbs, her combination spin was fantastic.

I know. So good. I saw her live at Bluebonnet Open with these programs back in June.

I think she's a bit older than most of the other ladies skating in Novice. (Taking this info from Sylvia's page here https://unseenskaters.wordpress.com/nationals/)

I know she's skating novice pairs at Nationals as well. Wonder what her ultimate future in skating will be...

Free is underway. I'm rooting for Anna Grace Davidson. She is a year behind because of injury - won intermediate in Omaha, 2 years ago.

Almost not fair someone 17 still a novice going against girls much younger with less maturity and power in their skating.

I was actually typing up the same thing. Emily Chan is in a league of her own after that SP and FS.

I know we are not supposed to compare national scores to international, but hey it is fun.

Her total score of 149.25 would have been
11th at Skate America
8th at Skate Canada
7th at COC (higher than Christa Gao or Ashley Cain)
10th at Rostelecom
9th at TEB
9th at NHK (higher than Christina Gao)

I want to know what the story is here.

Made me interested to look.

I did find this: http://www.gofundme.com/i6k7s4 which indicates that a move to Dallas caused a change in training time and a switch to homeschooling. Trouble with balancing school/skating could cause a delay in being ready to move up a level.

Also, here's the results from the past few years:

2014 Boston Novice Ladies, where she had a total of 97.14 SP+FS : http://www.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/results/2014/2014_us_fs_champs/CAT009SEG012.html
2013 Omaha Novice Ladies, where she had a total of 105.84 SP+FS: http://www.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/results/2013/68390/CAT009SEG018.html

Massive improvement due to training change + some of her best skating? Probably see a level move next year. 17 isn't common for a novice-level ladies' singles skater, but her results from the previous two years don't necessarily indicate that this massive score was expected. (Apparently she made massive jumps from SWP regionals - 117.60 - to Midwestern Sectionals - 134.73 - to Nationals.) I forget when the Qualifying Comp registrations are due by, but she and her coaches probably had to make a choice before they realized how much she'd actually improved.

"Trouble with balancing school and skating..." Makes my blood boil, as SCHOOL SHOULD COME FIRST. Not skating. And Emily, while lovely, is not going to be one of the very very few who derives fame and fortune from figure skating.
My admiration goes to skaters who also make school an important part of their lives: Christine Gao, Polina, Rachel Flatt and many many others.
