So will I. One of the great excitements of the fall season was to see what Nelli and Alexander would have for new programs

Perhaps Daniel Eaton could team up with Nelli?

The Ice Dance world was just not ready for a team like them, I suppose.

Devastated.

I am so sad! Such an innovative team! I liked that they pushed boundaries. Ice dancing just got a little less fun:(

I'm sad but I thought they would retire after the Olympics, so I'm glad I got to see them for one more season at least. I can't recall who Germany's second dance team is, since Kolbe and Caruso retired and didn't Koch and Nuchtern split?

The second German team at Euros was Jennifer URBAN / Sevan LERCHE, but they didn't qualify for the FD.

Oh, I'll miss them :( Without S/S and now them, German figure skating is in serious trouble... (and except for Lutricia Bock, they don't really have talented Juniors coming up)

It is about time for that.
This lack of technical ability and technique in their age is almost painful.
It was a permanent nice try to hide it with "unusual" choreo.
If one needs to make oneself a "clown" to be appreciated and beloved it is a little bit sad in its own way.....
Good luck for them in their private life.

I hope NOT to get Gazsi back as a technical specialist ala Maurizio Margaglio :)

It's a dang shame. They hinted on retirement in interviews in years past, but stayed around when they finally broke into the top 10 @euros.
I guess it's disheartening that despite their efforts, they arent even rewarded in better PCS in subsequent years. The disappointment, confusion, and disgust on their faces is evident when they receive their scores.

But I agree with the Eurosport guys- they'd do well in a show environment. I'd pay money just to see those two in their creative element.

German Figuren skating has got hugh problems. S/S ended, Z/G retire, Kolbe/Caruso split, Prößl/Blommaert split, Liebers injured last year, Weinzierl injured this season, Savchenko/Massot are not allowed to compete and the government forbit the German Assocciation to pay Ingo Steuer...

In addition there is hardly not reputation from the society and politics,

It is hard to bear this.

Yea, it's surprising coming from such a wealthy country that has a strong tradition and success in winter sports.

Actually credit for their original and unusual choreo goes primarily to coach Martin Skotnicky, a former Czech champion ice dancer with his sister Diana. He was assistant coach to Torvill & Dean (when they trained in Oberstdorf) and also coached at various times, the Duchesnays, Rahkamo & Kokko and Winkler & Lohse - teams noted for interesting and original choreography.

The Shibs need to train here.

Yea. They've been in a rut since traditional choreography and plots dont work well with siblings, hence why so much of their FD content revolves around boring ballroom themes.
Plus, they have the great skating skills to elevate the entertaining content that the Germans consistently pull out

So while I appreciate Z&G's boldness, I must say, "Just because it's different, it doesn't mean it's good." Their stuff is decent, but they're rarely memorable. I can imagine how frustrated they must be to languish in the ranks, but the reason is that they haven't had a breakthrough either artistically and technically. I think they'll make good ice dancing consultants and assistants to coaches. There is that problem (which Stepanova also has) with Nelli's bent legs that don't provide good extension and depth of edges. Their choreography isn't very spectacular. Their Paris and the Nerd program is kitsch at best.

I know there are many hardcore Pechalat and Bourzat fans, but for this same reason, "Just because it's different, it doesn't mean it's good." If they can't even be good with the classics, I don't know if they can be good with the weird, original stuff. This applies to Z&G's choice of programs. Judges just don't know what to do with them.

I hope they will find another niche in skating that will fulfill them and bring out their best. I almost I want to congratulate on retiring (I know that can be interpreted as mean), but it seems to me they'll never be happy with their results if they continue to skate on this level.

It takes an extraordinary amount of exceptional talent to do weird, original programs.

While Skotnicky can help them tailor programs with cool concepts, it doesn't mean they have the gravitas to pull it off. After all, they're not as talented as the Duchesnays, or Torvill and Dean, or Rakhamo and Kokko. Winkler and Lohse were another German pair that I found tedious to watch.
