Oh no! I may be getting bronchitis

I haven't had a cold in almost ten years, but about five years ago I got bronchitis, and it started out as a bad sore throat. I kept thinking the bad sore throat would turn into a cold, but it never did. Instead, it went to my lungs and caused horrific coughing fits even though I was on antibiotics.

Throat started hurting last evening and I'm sure it's not sinus drainage this time. My throat has never hurt this bad with sinus drainage. If it were a cold it would've gone to my head by now.

I'm scheduled for LASIK on the 20th and am not sure if I should go see a doctor ASAP for my symptons. I don't believe in antibiotics unless absolutely necessary, since the over-prescribing of them has made some bugs resistant.

But the eye clinic is booked solid for LASIK and I would hate to lose my spot. Plus you aren't allowed to swim for at least one month after LASIK, and if I delay it I might not be able to swim when I go on vacation in July or August, depending if I get to go to our summer home at all.

I'm not sure what to do.

johar,
DEFINITELY get the sore throat checked out. with no other symptoms, you could be talking sinus infection or strep throat and you don't want to mess with either so close to sceduled eye surgery.

maybe i sound paranoid, but since i have a kidney disease, i've heard enough horror tales about seemingly minor problems becoming major ones. being sick is no fun. being thought a hypochondriac isn't fun either, but i've been told it is better to get these things checked out if you have multiple health problems &/or surgery coming up.

OK, I'm calling after I send this post. Strep throat is another thing I'm worried about, and a possibility. I looked back in my throat it's a very red.

Good timing, body.:(

Johar,

Good call. Hopefully, even if you do need to go on antibiotics you'll be clear to go ahead with your eye surgery.

I have a very healthy respect for strep throat. While most people will get over it with or without antibiotics, it can have a nasty aftermath. My cousin ended up with scarlet fever (i think that's the one) and some minor heart damage. She's lucky it wasn't worse. Needless to say, everyone in our family pays attention to sore throats.

When you're young, you think all those horror stories are distant. Nothing to do with you. As you get older, you find out that those things can happen to you and people you know and love. I never would have believed some of the oddball things that I now know have happened to people I know!

Hope you feel better soon. And let us know about the eye surgery. I don't know anyone who's had that one yet and I'm curious. Good luck.

The doctor is out until Monday. Great.....

My mom thinks it's allergies. I know my body and it's not allergies at all. Of course she thought I had trapped gas in my body when I was actually having a kidney stone attack:rolleye:

Your doctor should have someone covering his/her practice for emergencies. Call back and ask who that person is!

Get Well!!!

Johar listen to Bronxgirl. Get a doctors opinion. Bronchitis doesn’t go away that quickly, so you need to get some meds right now. A couple of years ago, I would be sick for 3 weeks with bronchitis and OK for 2 weeks and the whole cycle would start all over and this went on for a couple of years until I had to go see a specialist. Like you said you don’t want to mess up your eye appointment date.

Be good now and do what we say.

Damn this town. I called and nobody is filling in for my doctor. And there are no walk-in clinics in our area.

My throat doesn't hurt as bad as it did yesterday, but my head feels worse today. Sneezing, congestion, some coughing, runny nose, minor body aches.

It weird how the nose can be congested yet runny at the same time.

Going tosleep last night was awful. I read almost 70 pages of Ghost Story:D

I did take some Alka-Seltzer Plus. Will take another dosage before bed.

Ten years without a cold. I guess my body is giving me the mother of all respiratory ailments to make up for it.

I'm still not sure if this is sinus or a cold, though.

If you don't have a fever, you can probably rule out a bacteria infection such as strep.........sounds like you're working up to a cold or maybe the flu.........if it gets worse, head for the emergency room of your nearest hospital..........take care and good luck..............42

There is often aspirin or tylenol in Alka seltzer products which will mask a fever, and lack of fever even by itself doesn't predict the presence or absence of an infection like strep throat (Sorry, in my previous life I was an infectious diseases specialist). If you do have reasonable health insurance, I would go to the ER if possible to get checked out. There are no out patient clinics associated with your local hospital? Most community hospitals will have one not only to serve as a patient referral, but to avoid having patients with colds coming to the ER.(not the best use of resources) but if there is no altrenative and you still feel awful, go before it does turn into bronchitis!

Coughing more, congestion level the same. I thought colds only lasted 3 days in most people. Feels like I'm trying to cough up phlem.

I went out and bought Lysine and Echinacea herbal supplements. My friend swears by Echinacea. She said she had a real bad cold that went away in three days after taking it.

Poor Johar, :( :( I just wanted to tell you to be sure to spit out the phlem. My doctors told me that was really important with bronchitis. I went through a really large box of kleenex. Hope those other remedies help you to feel better.

Dee

PS Make sure you are drinking a lot of water. It helps to break up that phlem.

My eustachian tubes are starting to itch and hurt at the same time.

I am feeling so miserable, and it seems to be getting worse, not better.

Johar sorry to hear your not feeling too good. If what you have is a cold it will sometimes take a couple of weeks to get over. Echinacea is good to take but better to take when you think that a cold is coming on, because once you have one you have one. If you want to loosen your phlegm (mucus) take some expectorant. Chicken soup, jucies with vitamin c, (orange juice is good), lots of liquids (water, teas) and rest is what you need if you have a cold. However if what you have is a bacterial infection you must see a doctor.
