Oh NO! Poor Murakami is last. He was last to skate at nationals and that did NOT go well for him. Stay strong!

*angry face* Two. Skaters.

Just. Two. Skaters.

They could have easily kept everyone. But no. They had to be mean and nasty and cruel and cut just two skaters.

I am in complete agreement. As I said on another thread, making it to a major ISU championship is a big deal. I'm sure these skaters are learning a ton from the experience. Even if they're not permitted to receive marks for their FS, where is the harm in letting them do it as an exhibition before the FS starts. Absolutely no harm done, and even more learning and goodwill towards developing skaters.

Sport can be tough, but there is no point not being supportive when it impacts no other competitor. And besides... it's not like there would be a dozen exhibition skates to deal with.

And I just realized that these two men are the only competitors in the entire 4CC who will not be able to present their Free Program.

All the ladies, pairs, and dancers advanced.

C'mon, ISU. Have a heart.

I feel for the two men, but I can understand why the ISU has refrained from bending the rules, which would be a slippery slope and a can of worms (sorry for mixing metaphors).

Re sheer practicality:
If the two men were to perform their free skates as exhibitions (before the qualifiers compete), they should have a full-warm up period as well. And an extra ice resurfacing would be necessary to keep everything by the book for those actually competing, I believe.
We're talking on the order of thirty extra minutes: six for warm-up + two 4:30 programs + fifteen for the Zamboni.
If I am reading the schedule correctly, the Victory Ceremony for Pairs ends at 17:00. And the Men's FS begins at 17:30. Would be cutting it very close.
(The Men's Victory Ceremony doesn't end until 22:00. And Exhibition Practice begins the next morning at 9:40.)

Other issues:
Should IN and other media have the discretion whether or not to stream the extra two skates? If they chose not to, would even more griping from fans ensue?
What if, heaven forbid, one of the skaters injured himself performing his freeskate exhibition? The idea wouldn't seem like such a good one in that case.
Etc., etc.

Or keep it simple: in events where a cut would result in four or fewer skaters being cut, there will be no cut.

I went to watch the men's practice this afternoon, and my thought is, it is still an open game. No one is particularly outstandingly good or horribly bad, everyone was kind of normal. So I think the Free Skate is still unpredictable.

I am saying it because I knew Denis was going to nail the SP after watching his practice the day before. He was literally killing every single element, and performed with musicality and artistry (even though it was only practice). Similar to GPF, after watching Hanyu's extraordinary practice I knew he was going to kill it. So I am predicting from how the practice went, and I predict nothing:p

I love D10's LP from the practice run-through. Best wishes for his best showing with his Asian music performing in his ancestral land.

I hope those who showed us what they were fully capable of in the SP will do the same in the LP performances.

Also wishing for redemption by those thrown off by their SP quad debut.

They could warm up the crowd :)

Along those lines, they could also be invited to the exhibition. That might be a gesture that some places may want to think about. I don't care they came in the last two places, I would totally watch their exhibition and give them love if they were invited!

As for the why. . . well if anyone is interested you can find the rules regarding how many skaters in each group, and when warm ups are, etc. on pages 93 and 94 of this massive PDF which i think is they they just always do the cut. Keeping two skaters would juggle the schedule. . . I think it would be worth it, but hey what do i know?

At any rate, I thought some of you might be interested in reading the rules, even if we don't agree with them.

Thx for looking up the ISU document, Stitch. (Title: Special Regulations & Technical Rules, Single and Pair Skating and Ice Dance 2014, as accepted by the 55th Ordinary Congress June 2014.)
In the section for "ISU Championships – Special Technical Rules," it says (on p. 87):
2. Based on the result of the Short Program/Short Dance, the Competitors placed 1-24 in Single Skating 1-16 in Pair Skating and 1-20 in Ice Dance only shall qualify for the final Free Skating/Free Dance.

And again, I for one don't blame the ISU for sticking to its rule that applies across the board to all ISU championships.
The skaters know that they have to place in the top twenty-four in the SP to qualify for the FS.
It really is no more cruel (IMO) to adhere to the rule in this case than at any another competition that has more than twenty-four entries.

And I cannot agree with the idea of those who do not qualify for the FS receiving invitations to perform in the gala.
Although it would be a supportive gesture to them, it also would be a slap in the face (IMO) to the many who placed higher than them in the segment, but who are not given the same gala opportunity.

ETA: If you are wondering whether one of my favorites ever has missed the cut, the answer is Yes. Liam Firus in Sochi. I was very sad for him, but he (and all others who were cut) knew the rules before the SP.

This another 3 a.m o'clock meeting...My favourites are far behind. The first and my number 1 is Jason, and I also enjoy and respect the new kid on the block, Nam. I also hope Jeremy 10 has a wonderful program, like he had in the nationals, or even better. He said it is his last year in competition, but I think this could end up as the best year as a senior skater for him. I will miss him if he keeps his promise.
