How Do Judges Become Judges?

My friend is asking me to to join him and become a judge since he needs support for a small fed (he is studying to be a coach in Korea). I find the whole procedure a bit overwhelming I don't know what should I do. He asked the Asian Skating Union and they explained a bit to him.
Apparently I am still a bit dazed since my work even though not very busy, it's not like I am playing all the time either. I want to ask for experience from people who have been through this (like applying to be a coach?). And how they deal with it.

I'm Italian and I passed the test To attend the course in order ti become a regional Judge (so i guess Alba is one of my course mates??). We are not required a specifical skating ability beside a general tech knwoledge, tech specialists Who have To be skaters that competed at least at junior level and are now coaching. As judges we have To pass an exam an then have 2 training competitions, and then we become "REGIONAL" judge. After 3 years we can have another exam To be "national" and then a further one To be "international". The ultimate is "ISU Judge", but I think that I'll need more or less 12 yrs To get that level (and also a good mastering of english)... You won't have me To Judge worlds for a very long time! :(
As judge we can be also tech controller and referee.
Sorry for my english, my iPhone was set in italian.. English is not my mother tongue.

fcolo, welcome to Golden Skate! Post long and often. Thanks for a great first post! Please tell us more as you progress thru your courses? Your English is fine. Over one third of GSers do not speak English as a mother tongue; you are not alone!

Well that was not my very first post becauas I had a former account that was named Pandorina, but it didn't work anymore!
One of worst aspects of becoming a judge is that you must not post in any forum or social network your opinion about a skater Or a competition.. So bad!
Anyway now that I'm more into IJS i can understand that is not aa easy as it seems! GOE can be very conplicated To evaluate especially when you have To do it live!

Congratulations. :cheer:
Unfortunately I didn't went. First of all I was not 100% convinced as I was more interested to learn about Ice Dance, rather than become a judge per se. Second, I couldn't go in the end even if I wanted to because I had to be in Rome for 10 days and came back to Milan on the 27th of May, the test was on the 24th. My friend Manuela is there though. She's from Rome, maybe you two have met. :) I would like to do the data operator course though. I'll see if there are any and how to apply.

Data operator is fascinating, requires minimal training, and is a brilliant way to learn more about the technical side of the sport. Listening to a tech panel talk is fascinating.

Yes but I think that you have To be so fast and accurate that you don't even have enough time to enjoy the talk Or the competition!

Rome si awesome. I love that city and I lived there for many years. However, I wouldn't call it more liveable. Milan is way better in that sense because it's smaller and has more and better public transport, 5 metro lines, and things are much better organised here. Rome is also more expensive.

That will be great. :)

That's exactly why I want to do it. :)

At first, yes. But when you get into the rhythm, you can still definitely enjoy the competition and the talk. The thing that can be hard for some the first few times is that you cannot respond to what you see on the ice emotionally - no clapping, no cheering, not even smiling during a skater's program.

That is the same for judges.. We were told not To smile, clap Or doing anything that can be considered as an opinion Or a signal To tue skater.. Always try To be unemotional and super partes
