Being realistic here, to say "it's hard to tell what comes next" is not exactly right. Likely she will have a few bad competitions and fans will blame it on illness, or a coaching situation, or a minor injury. Then she will bomb one of, if not both of, her programs at 2016 Nationals. This isn't negative; it is what has happened virtually every season in the last 5 years. I'm not sure why people are criticizing posters who don't believe that skating a few sessions with Liza and Mishin more than five months before the GP season begins is going to be the spark that is going to turn everything around for her. Again, looking at five years of a trend and thinking that the trend will continue isn't negative.
Maybe you're right. But why is a (relatively) harmless thread about her training with Mishin generating these "She should retire!!" posts? I mean, if the thread title was, "Mirai Nagasu intends to continue competitive career," sure, let's offer our thoughts on that. But this response here seems a little... excessive, like LRK said. What other threads will we have? "Mirai Nagasu celebrates her birthday" "OMG, she should retire!"

Taking off the Rose Colored glasses and telling it like it is, is hardly negative? Every year it is the same old story with Mirai.

You mean like how she was the number 3 US lady at Nationals just over a year ago? And she was in an excellent position this year to be on the World team but had a bad fall. Mirai has had a lot of unlucky breaks along with some of her technical problems. Is it so wrong to hope that one of these days something will break in her favor?

I am not some super Mirai fan, but if she gets it together the other US ladies should be worried. She has a presence and IF she gets full rotation on her jumps she will be one hell of a threat.

I still remember Worlds 2010 and her magnificent short program. She was number 1 in a field including Mao and Yuna. Gracie or Ashley haven't been able to accomplish anything similar/better. Granted, it was a few years back but I thought she looked in pretty good shape at Nationals. It is a shame that the board collision ruined her chances. I hope she comes back in great shape and uses that talent of hers to full potential.

Mirai was 3rd at Nationals almost a year and a half ago. Since then, she bombed at 4CC 2014 and failed to win a medal at the GP, even in a severely depleted field at CoR. She didn't even medal at the US International Classic. So I don't see that she was in such an 'excellent position' to be on the World team.

It is understandable that people often deviate from the topic under heated discussions.

She hadn't been with Tom Z for very long by the grand prix and by us classic. I don't think that's a fair assessment of her abilities. (In my opinion she should have been third at COR, but that's only my thoughts) She was fourth after the short at 2015 nationals with a very realistic chance of placing 3rd-5th overall. Josh had a bad gp season to but he was expected to podium too, so it's not like this is just a Mirai thing either. Had she not crashed into the boards...we won't know what would have happened. I wish people would just have the "oh, good for her" attitude about this. It's a harmless thread about her working a little bit with Mishin. It never said that her intentions were to get her triple axel (although that would be nice) it just simply said that she worked with Mishin for a couple of days...I don't see why bickering about her future prospects is relevant in this particular thread

Ain't that the truth. Any thread with Mirai's name in it (except her fan fest thread) will inevitably devolve into the "she's done!" discussion.

Negative: Mirai has struggled with technical and consistency issues for the last few years and has endured some disappointing results. Next year will probably be the same, if not worse. (Eeyore).

Positive: Mirai has struggled with technical amd consistency issues for the last few years and has endured some disappointing results. I hope she comes out like gangbusters next season. (Tigger) :)

A thought that struck me is that I believe Tom Z respects Mishin a lot (I seem to remember a photo of them both together from earlier this season? - also there's that old sweet story about the jacket, I think.) Maybe he wanted Mishin's advice - or perhaps rather to consult with him on how to proceed with Mirai. It's like Doctor A calling in Doctor B, an eminent specialist in their field, to discuss a case. Fresh eyes might be an asset, and why not get the best eyes in the business when it comes to jumps? So, it might not just be the few days Mirai worked with Mishin that will be the effect of this meeting.

I do think Mirai is a beautiful skater. I want her to figure out her UR problem. She has the goods but the reality is that it gets harder every year. I hope she gets whatever help she needs but more than that I want her to get her confidence back. If a lesson with a coach like Mishin helps even a little then great. Mirai is an adult, if it's worth it to her to continue at this level then that's what she should do. Even if she never wins another medal I want to see her skate for herself with confidence again.

Josh was injured---that's why he withdrew from one GP and skated poorly at the other. But Josh has finished top 4 or better at Nationals every year since 2013, won JW 2013, won bronze at the first US International Classic in 2013, was 6th at 4CC 2014 and 2nd at 4CC 2015. Despite his injuries, Josh has had a consistently much better recent competition record than Mirai.

Mirai has often skated good SPs, only to struggle in the FS. That's what happened at CoR this year. She was 4th after the SP, but then was 6th in the FS with multiple URs and low PCS scores. It wasn't that she had any significant errors in the FS, but she skates with a such a blank face, seeming to have no connection with the music or the audience. She is so concentrated on getting through her program that she has no energy left to sell the program or the character she is portraying, hence the low PCS scores. It's only after the last steps that she is able to smile, but by then it is too late.

And I just want to underline that Mirai was not the only TZ student to work with Mishin.
For instance, a TZ student who is not even ten years old yet also had worked with Mishin for the week in Colorado Springs -- per an Instagram photo and caption.

So I agree very much with your comments re TZ's overall respect for Mishin the coach -- as someone beneficial to TZ's students in general, not only Mirai.

Agree also that TZ has a lot of personal affection for Mishin the human being. The old story about Mishin's Olympic jacket is very sweet.

Thank you, MM :).

There's a great podcast interview from Manleywoman with Tom Z. Very informative/fun and yes he is a great storyteller. He talked about his admiration of Mishin there as well, plus other interesting things Rachael and Josh injuries for ex.
