"Strong rumor at highest level: #icedance may no longer be @Olympics discipline. It would be such a pity!! Decision on June 5th @ IOC meeting"

Update 21-05-2015

ISU Statement

21 May 2015 - Lausanne, Switzerland

There is absolutely no truth to this. The review of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games program is currently underway and a final decision will be made during the next meeting of the IOC Executive Board on June 7-8, 2015. The IOC confirms that within the review process the ISU has made a number of proposals which do not include the removal of Ice Dance from the Olympic Program.

No way! Ice dance is amazing, and requires a lot of skill. It's very artistic and beautiful to watch. I hope they don't remove it. I actually enjoy watching it more than pairs or even singles sometimes. Just because it has no jumps doesn't mean that it shouldn't be a part of the Olympics. :(

What a lot of bunk. One of the most interesting (and ultimately disappointing for me) rivalries in the last Olympics was the ice dance.

And what would they do if dropped out of the Olympics? Worlds? I hope this isn't part of the rubbish push for synchro!

Who is this David Molina? Is he reliable? His bio says he's a judge.

I will class it as just a rumour! It won't and should not happen. There might be an adaption to Ice Dance ie bringing back the original dance or changes to short dance - but no removal. What would be the point!. I know its always been subjective but I cannot see any reason for its removal.

Please tell me this is bu....it. Ice dance is much more difficult than it seems. The lifts, the step sequnces, the unison - everything.

The trouble is, the rules changed. Previously, there used to be a limit for the total number of sports that could take place at the Olympics. Now, there is a limit for disciplines. Meaning some disciplines could be dropped in order to make room for another sports.

What? That is just stupid. I agree it is more difficult than it seems. I hope this is just some kind of a bad joke or at least that they won't do that.

David Molina is figure skating judge. He normally tends to be very reliable

Indeed!!

Still....I'm with Karne in thinking this might be a push for synchro to be included in the next Olympics. A trade of some sort. The troubling thing is that Molina has been very reliable in the past but still...... I'm left a bit

Maybe though.....at least from a positive standpoint......this will actually generate some buzz and drum up some support for Ice Dancing.

Very interesting indeed and I'm sure much speculation and emotion will arise before it's all said and done but in the end....a tweet about rumors is not a very definitive piece of evidence, at least for me, to get all worked up about.

There are a couple problems with getting rid of ice dance...

1. Probably over half of the top choreographers(especially younger ones) are former ice dancers.
2. Ice dance is the most "competitive" discipline for nations outside of the top federations.

If this is about synchro, I think it would be a mistake to switch ice dance for synchro because what's needed before synchro in the Olympics is figure skating's equivalents to triathlons and decathlons. I'd call the triathlon equivalent a "duet" and have them do singles, pairs, and ice dance elements right in the same very long(5-6 minutes) program. I'd call the decathlon equivalent a figure skating pentathlon with(men's single, lady's single, pairs, ice dance, duet) where it's just a couple doing one skate in all disciplines and the scoring done like the team event.

Although I love pairs, if it came down to getting rid of a discipline, I would get rid of pairs, because fewer countries are involved than in the other events.

The ioc are pushing to remove disciplines for the sake of politics.
As we know, there is a push to make the olympics gender balanced.

The ioc is pushing that if synchro is to be included, they want it to be A female only event.
As singles and pairs are assumed to be more athletic and more of a sport than ice dance, this makes ice dance a target.

Do you think strong federations like USA can't prevent it ffrom being removed? After all, at this moment ice dance is the only event where they are constantly fighting for medals.

I don't care for synchro, sorry, between both I will choose ice dance.

I hope nothing comes of this.

Broadly speaking, I thought Ice Dance at the last Olympics was the best and most exciting of the figure skating competitions. At that level, it requires incredible skill, athleticism and coordination - and yet it is also the most glamorous, beautiful and dramatic of sports.

And to make room for Synchro? Sounds crazy. I mean, to a layman (and probably Cinquanto) - isn't Synchro the same thing as Ice Dance, but with a lot more people, and a lot less impressive?

I certainly hope that the judges and Federations that have been manipulating results so obviously with COP feel ashamed. They have made a mockery of this sport. It doesn't surprise me in the least that this is coming up at the meeting. It is no longer a competition and therefore no longer a sport. It has become a political game of which individual or Nation has the strongest influence over the judges and tech specialists decisions. The most recent competition, Worlds, was ridiculous. Such a blatant manipulation of where teams were being placed, high and low, in order for countries team placements to add up to the required amount for maximum entries next year at Worlds. Russia tried so hard but even in the end they couldnt overcome the too obvious mistakes that were made.
If this event is removed from the Olympics the responsibility for that will land squarely on the shoulders of the offending Officials and Nations. If it is not removed then I sincerely hope that those same Officials and Nations start behaving as they should and judge what the see. Perhaps, then Ice Dance will become a sport again.

Female-only? How is it "gender balanced" if it excludes one gender?!

NOOOOO 😓

You can't do that!!! (I may be biased because the U.S. *just* got really good at it, but it's a valuable asset to skating!)

The overall balance of athletes across the whole games. Instead of addressing why women aren't competiting in other sports, it's easier to improve the ratio by introducing a new female only event.

I just pray this isn't true. There are so many athletes who are working with the long term aim of competing at the Olympics, investing huge amounts of time and money in it, and it would be heartbreaking for them to have that opportunity taken away. It would have huge repercussions on figure skating in many smaller countries - Spain is still developing a broader figure skating program, and aside from Javi, its strength is the dance teams of H/D & R/F. In the UK, funding for the sport at an elite level as a whole comes from the potential to place in the top 10 at Olympics - it has increased enormously thanks to Coomes/Buckland, and if they can't go to the Olympics, they aren't eligible to be counted towards funding and the whole sport in this country loses out. There were two countries - Lithuania & Turkey - that only sent skaters in Ice Dance to Sochi. If ice dance goes, they lose any Olympic representation, even if it's replaced with Synchro, those countries, and many other smaller ones will not be able to put a team together.
