There are no words for how exciting it is to see Holland qualify directly... and with the Ladies! They were aiming for best sixteen, hoping for best twelve, but best eight? Wow.
According to nos.nl the last time they were at the Olympics was in 1976. (!)

Let's hope this doesn't mean the men will now underachieve...

Do they have a good team? I really only know of Epke Zonderland from the Dutch men.

I'm hardly an expert, but the Dutch men's team's goal for these Worlds is direct qualification, so best eight, and in the interviews they seem confident that they can pull it off. So, not sure how good that really makes them... I guess we'll have to wait and see. I'm worried that since the ladies now did so unexpectedly well, the guys will just have a complete off-day.

Of course. Men can be so hot and cold in gymnastics!

Should make for an awkward team dynamic though if they make it. Didn't Jeffrey Wammes sue Epke for the Olympic spot in London?

Hhhmm, now that you mention it... there was something going on then, wasn't there?

I dunno, the interviews now seem to stress the fact that the team dynamic is really good, probably because of that particular bit of history. ;-) I wonder how long it's been since they even qualified with a team?

Sorry for the OT, just realized this is the Ladies thread.

I will definitely watch all the finals, but I wonder what happened in the qualification with the Romanians? I don't understand gymnastics well but I really like their style. If I'm not mistaken they're one of the top teams and I feel sorry for them (but I still think they will qualify to the Olympics). I read some of the posts here and I didn't know that there is such a lack of support and equipment and everything in the Romanian gymnastics :(

I've been meaning to get back to this thread for a little while now...

I never did get around to making my predictions, but I would have said US 1st and then most likely Russia in 2nd. I would have put Romania probably 4th, certainly no lower than 5th! Who would have guessed they'd be 13th after the qualifying round? It really is heartbreaking, especially after reading the previous poster's comments about the state of gymnastics in Romania. I had heard training conditions weren't ideal but didn't realize they were that bad. I'm surprised considering how much history there is with gymnastics, particularly women's, in Romania.

I'm from the US and cheer for the US women, but like with skating, I don't really care where someone is from--I like many gymnasts! And I am fan of many of the Romanian gymnasts, including Catarina Ponor, who might be making a comeback for Rio.

I do think that Romania will get one of the remaining spots during qualifying, which I think is in January. I hope that if something good can come out of this for Romania, it will that their federation/government will start addressing some of the issues instead of ignoring them.

Another surprise was how well the UK women did. The men have been strong the past few years, but I didn't think the women would place quite that high. Looking forward to seeing more of Claudia Fragapane (the Pocket Rocket...I love it!) on FX!

I think Brazil will also grab another spot at qualifying--so close! I think they're in the same position the UK women were in before the London Olympics, and I'm sure it's extra important to them to have a full team in Rio.

^ Catalina Ponor was originally coming back for this World Championships and she was in the line-up of the team before they decided her injury was too serious for her to compete. Both Ponor and Izbasa have expressed their wish to compete at the Rio Olympics. The test competitions are in April, not in January, and Romania will compete with the teams who placed 9th to 16th in these qualifications.

For more information about the true state of the Romanian gymnastics, I highly recommed that you read this post.

ioanap, thanks for the correction on the test competitions. I don't know why I was thinking January.

Thanks for the link--very interesting. I sincerely hope that Romania's acknowledgement of the problems goes beyond that statement by their federation president! From what Nadia said, the girls were already concerned about the situation, but it sounds like no one was listening to them. I can't imagine the pressure they must have felt.

According to the latest news, the Romanian Olympic Committee is not pleased with what happened at Worlds and wrote a lengthy letter to the president of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation.

The Olympic Committe is requesting a foreign coach, a specialist for uneven bars saying that they will cover the costs of the contract. The president of the Committee is blaming the federation for not listening to their recommendations, requesting that coaches Belu and Bitang come back and doctors, psychologists and nutritionists for the national team. Romania has 6 months left to regroup and compete in the pre-Olympic test events and also to go back to being medal contenders.

The ROC should be very upset. They've been able to bank on women's gymnastics bringing in a team medal and at least one other gold in an event at the Olympics since 1976. They need get their act together for the test event in Rio. They're going to need Izbasa and Ponor to be in peak form there and to calm the inexperienced juniors, but that's just a band-aid. They can't rely on veterans forever and quick-fix funding that only comes to fruition after the national team has an embarrassing disaster that the whole world can see if they want to keep gymnastics alive in Romania.

It's absolutely unacceptable that they weren't even able to use their alternate, Munteanu, after Ocolisan pulled out due to injury because the national team hasn't been able to hire a sport psychologist to help her with her mental block.

Unfortunately Munteanu couldn't have helped much, because she doesn't do uneven bars at all. She's excellent on beam, but inconsistent. That's why the uneven bars situation seriously needs to be fixed. Munteanu, Jurca and Iridon have been winning a lot of medals as juniors and we were excited for them to turn seniors. Just last year they were saying Andreea Iridon would be our salvation on uneven bars because she had natural talent. These girls have tremendous potential, but lack motivation and psychological support.

The only one of the 5 girls who was able to hit all of her routines was Laura Jurca, and I'm getting the impression that she's not the type to implode under pressure. It's just a pity that her D scores have stayed junior level. I watched the National Championships and noticed a few more juniors (most notably Asiana Peng) who will be old enough to compete at the Olympics but they're mostly preparing for the Tokyo generation. They have to trust their young athletes more, because plenty of them have talent. What's destroying them is the federation itself and the lack of money to bring doctors, psychologists, and better apparatus in the smaller gym clubs.

I am so sad about the Romanian girls,

you all saw what happened right? I am angry and really "hits with fist on the table"... How can they not help them more and then blame them? This is just so rude...

If I find the time I might write a bit more, but I am only a spectator... maybe I can get a few quotes for you, if the internet will work, which is being a bit of an issue honestly. sad face :(

Wow. The gap between 1st and 2nd is almost 4 points, and the gap between 2nd and 24th is about 2.5.

Biles is really in a class of her own. She doesn't suit my eye... I prefer the "Nastia" type gymansts... but dang, she's good.

:agree: She isn't a favorite of mine either but credit where it's due, she is indeed excellent.

I have a place for both types of gymnasts in my heart. :) I appreciate the power of gymnasts like Biles and Reisman (and Shawn Johnson). And I enjoy the elegance of gymnasts like Kyla Ross (will miss her this WC!), Larisa Iordache, and Nastia Liukin. I think gymnasts like Maggie Nichols, Aliya Mustafina (will miss her, too!) and Giulia Steingruber are a nice mix of the two.

For today's team final, my prediction is U.S. then Russia, but after that I am not sure! The GB ladies have been quite a surprise--I have to admit I am pulling for them! Hard not to be excited for them as they have come so far since 2012. I wouldn't count the Chinese out either--their UB and BB strength is definitely a factor. Between gymnastics WC and Skate Canada, it is going to be a busy week!
