i thought i was the only one wants to see him sth more classical/contemporary for next season, i said this before but after watching Nobu skating to Liebestraum made me appreciate his skating more! and shows people that you dont just count on playing character, if that makes sense, i love Mika's originality but would love to see him try different things as well

this brings me to other subject, i would like to see Mika working Shae-Lynn Bourne or Pasquale Camerlengo, Shae-Lynn did some of my favourite programs this season, Yuzuru's Seimei, Alaine Chartrand's Pina, Seguin/Bilodeau's SP, Daisuke's new EX Lacrimosa (i like Ashles's SP too but not much ), they are all different in styles and showcases skaters' strenghts, given how quirky Mika is possibilities would be limitless :yahoo:

Talking of Averbukh, I kinda understand through his interviews that Olga to Mika is probably like Rohene to Jason, they both work as a team and they seem quite inseparable. But what do you guys think? Do you have any particular choreographer you want him to work with, if not Averbukh despite his appeal ?

It's funny, my favorite choreographer is Olga Glinka who works with Rukavitsin's team, and this other Olga from St. Petersburg also seems very creative and outside-the-box, just like her. I think there is some benefit to having one choreographer who understands a skater's personality & their strengths, so I don't necessarily feel like he needs to try a different choreographer, unless they start running out of new ideas. I do hope to see Mikhail try something different next season, but I don't particularly care if it's classical. I'm partial to Russian folk music, and would love to see him do something in that vein (but not the more overused pieces like Kalinka or Yablochko). Maybe something else a bit more dancey...tango perhaps, if it was a lesser used piece. No warhorses for Mikhail please! ;)

I really like Olga Glinka too. The two Olga from St. Petersburg are the two fascinating choreographers I discovered this season :) I'd love to see more from Olga K., but I do think changing a choreographer might give him that extra he probably needs right now. If so, I'd love to see him work with Peter Tchernyshev. Not only that he choreographed my most favoute programmes like K/S Manfred, Kerr's Exogenesis, and Kovtun Beethoven FS, I think his theatrical style will suit Mika very well.

And I'm seconding folk music! He's done Russian Gypsy song couple years back:

I want to see something in line with this, probably Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody? Or could be something more pastoral.

Schnittke is an awesome choice too. Speaking of his meta-theatricality, it'll be a masterpiece if he could skate to The Story of an Unknown Actor... As to classic, what I had in mind was Eric Satie, probably like Flabby Preludes for a Dog. Fun, but will be a more modern and polished approach.

I think the quirky and whimsical suits him very well - which doesn't necessarily mean "comedic", of course - it occurred to me that he'd probably do very well with the theme to

Midsomer Murders
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvD73A9eXXk

Not that I'm seriously suggesting this as something he ought to skate to - maybe a tad too similar to his current LP in a way.

ETA - On the subject of themes, I'd love someone to do a program to the

Inspector Morse theme
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okafNPLStwU

I actually think Mika could bring it off; and this has quite a different feel to it; far more sadness.

^^

The draw just took place, he drew #2 in the 5th group. It seems he'll skate second after resurfacing, sounds good!

A Japanese article by J Sport (the TV channel broadcasting the Euros) says about him:
http://www.jsports.co.jp/press/article/N2016012615064106.html

"Russia's Mikhail Kolyada holds the second highest seasonal best after Fernadez. At the Grand Prix Rostelecom Cup in November last year, he placed 5th, only losing 0.95 to the third. Winning silver at the Russian Championships in December, he is not missing the given chances. It will be no wonder if he wins his first medal at his first Europeans with the momentum he's got this season."

I like the idea of Inspector Morse a lot! Anyone skated to this music?

^
It is not first time I see Mika's pic together with Zenya. Is something going on?! :)

Only hours left before the sp. You go Mika!:cheer2:
Reports say the rink in size is different from both european & american standard - some skaters seem to have a problem with that. Is it the same arena which was used for Ondrei Nepela? If so at least Mika is well prepared as he skated there before.

I need to go to bed but can I just leave a good news... Mikhail got all level4s including his step sequence!
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CZwjkJoWcAEaLjc.jpg:large

IIRC, the last time he got StSq4 was back in JGP Courchevel 2012 (well I don't know about the domestic competitions), and I don't think he's ever got all level4s. I was kind of feeling disappointed that he is not getting level4 for that amazing steps and I was actually doubtful if he was capable of it. But now he has proven he can do it. Yay!

Good luck Mika tomorrow. We all know what you're capable of :hap10:

Even with the mistakes I loved Mikhail's SP. He's great to watch. Loved his skating and the program, he's quite artistic. And he has those jumps just needs to be a bit more certain about landings. Good luck tomorrow!

I just hope he isn't too disappointed, he's a fighter and still performed so well. Hopefully he can come back roaring in the LP tomorrow, he has nothing to lose, so maybe he can be less nervous. Go for it quirky prince! :cheer:

And I'm pretty happy how well liked he seemed to be in the competition thread

The Swedish Eurosport commentator said that Mika had been "a star" at the practice sessions, so it probably was nerves. Hopefully he's got them out of the way now.

He now looks more relaxed during an interview doesn't he? ;) And he has such a lovely mellow voice...

Yes, before EC I was hoping for podium, but I will put up with top5 now  He has the goods for it for sure!

Kolyada is a joy to watch! He really has everything: big jumps, good artistry... He's even cute!! :p
I don't care too much about the mistakes, maybe it was because of the debut and then he'll skate a clean free programme. He still has little chances to podium!

Little videos of his FS run through this morning. Fall on quad but at least he's not popping it! Spins are amazing as usual.

I think his pattern is either a good SP followed by a little flawed FS or flawed SP followed by decent FS. Should be a good day today! Good luck :hap10:

I'm not that worried about his mistakes yesterday either. I like the fact he never really let the first mistake takes over the whole performance. Even when he makes mistakes, he gives out everything he can do at that moment. He didn't lose full mark on the quad yesterday, the GOE was -3.77. The judges do recognize how good his jumping technique is.

Thank you so much Perdita for all the updates! I'm sure Mika will do well today - but I'll still be nervous like crazy before he skates

And he has such a lovely mellow voice...

Hihi, it's a funny contrast to his more energetic and cheeky personality on the ice (and his cheeky smile, he always looks like a cute little puppy rascal to me, in the best sense ;) )
