According to the ISU Communication 1944, the guidelines of giving GOEs to step sequences say that a certain level of GOE must be awarded based on the fulfilment of the 'bullet points', which are:

1) good energy and execution
2) good speed or acceleration during sequence
3) use of various steps during the sequence
4) deep clean edges (including entry and exit of all turns)
5) good control and commitment of the whole body maintaining accuracy of steps
6) creativity and originality
7) effortless throughout
8) element enhances the musical structure

By fulfilling 2 of them, the judge should give +1 GOE. 4, +2. 6 or more, +3.

On the other hand, while giving negative GOEs, the guidelines are:

Fall: -2
Less than half of the pattern doing steps/turns: -2 to -3
Stumble: -2
Poor quality of steps/turns/positions: -1 to -3
Does not correspond to the music: -1 to -2

Now, what are your favourite step sequences? And do you think they are given the correct amount of GOE? If not, what would you give?

Anything Mao Asada has ever done, pretty much. This season, Adelina Sotnikova's SP StSq, both of Mao's StSq, Rika Hongo's FS StSq and Gracie Gold's SP StSq.

OK, My favorite step sequences are the type that you either love or hate. Both of these programs were successful with Leonova's winning the 2012 Worlds SP.

Rachael Flatt got so much Flack ;) For this step sequence. Maybe it was her new short hair, or just the fact that she really felt the passion of the music.

Here's my favorite (Alexei Yagudin, Winter, choreographed by Morosov).

This sequence is maligned in the CoP era as being hokey and simple -- what actually did he do except dance on his tiptoes. But it sent everyone (including Michelle Kwan in 2003) to rush to Morozov for something like it.

It satisfies bullet points 1, 2, 6, 7, and 8.

My favourite step sequence might be the one from Kostner's SP in 11/12 (you rarely hear the crowd start clapping during a step sequence nowadays). Didn't receive 3's across the board, mostly 2's, but GOE 1.50 isn't bad. So maybe a little underscored in my opinion.

YES!!!!!!! This is how dorky I am. I learned, and then taught his entire step sequence to my dance students and they loved it. We did it going across the floor as a warm up during our classes.

That's true. When it happens though, it' really special! I was watching Davis/White's 2010 nationals FS today and noticed the audience went wild after their diagonal (?) StSq.

As an ice dance fan, I am an enthusiastic uber of step sequences of all kinds ( :shame: even those by singles and pairs )

;) It is not uncommon for dance audiences to clap to specially good step sequences.

In singles, every so often there is a program where the step sequence is a real highlight of the program, as it is in Yagudin's "Winter"

One such was also Jason Brown's Riverdance.

^A lot of skaters have great stsq. But yes, Mao does them well consistently.

Akiko had great programs, period, and her step sequences were always wonderful. Musical and energetic, like the one in her Firedance program: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xgEiTZR-I0

Of the same vein in men's would be Daisuke Takahashi, who could always incite hollering from the crowds during his steps lol.

Some of my all time favorites would be:
- Yuna Kim - Danse Macabre Worlds 2009 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZAvsv93ZFM
Everything is so dynamic and sharp while still maintaining the sense of musicality and flow over it.
- Joshua Farris - Give Me Love - 4cc 2015
- Kostner's Bolero - the hip sashay, the slight pause in between, the air kiss, etc etc
- Plushenko Nijinsky at the end - I love everything about this program even if the beginning is a bit skate jump skate jump. The footwork in the end is particularly exciting coupled with the music.

I don't pay too much attention to step sequences and don't remember many of them, so I will add just some of my favorites:

1)Mao Asada this year's SP-I love the music change and how she is able to interpret it. The music is slow first, but then it is faster and faster, and then it is really fast and she just skates like that. Slow and then faster and faster, also the steps are well choreoographed to the music and most important think is Mao really have a good steps. It might look easy, but first those steps she does are not so easy at all, and second she is able to do it the way, the steps fits into the music perfectly she is not behind. And also she can interpret it very well. I can't even describe it, I just love this step sequence.
+many many others Stsq Mao has ever done. She is like a queen of step sequences.
2)Julia at this year's Nationals SP-I know this is second StSq I add here, but I don't really remember those from past years and I really liked this one. Her StSq started just after her triple-triple, she knew all jumps are done and she could fully enjoyed it. And I think many will agree with me this was maybe her best StSq she has ever done and definitely most enjoyable. And then the satisfaction I felt for her was great. She also really smiled during this StSq :)
3)Sasha Cohen SP at the Olympics 2006-Love the expression, interpretation, enjoyment, the happiness. You can see how she sells the program and communication with the audience.

It's great as you can see the different male skaters and what they excel at.
Brian and Florent flaunting their frenchness <3
Denis and his choreographic flair
DAISUKE OMG.... do I miss him
and Chan, there's nothing that makes me happier than hearing the sound of the blades on the ice.

Enjoy!

Michelle Kwan's 2004 nationals FS step sequence. I get shivers every time I watch it, it is absolutely the most emotional step sequence I have ever seen.

When it comes to Mao, I loved her Swan Lake, Rach 2 and this year's short program step sequences most :).

Another honourable mention - Sasha Cohen and her 2002 Olympics SP step sequence. The jumps (russian split and others) were what made it so special for me.
