I was faffing around on the internet when I came across a video I had not looked at in a while, and it gave me the idea for this thread.
Some of our skaters have programs of great success, that are replayed again and again, but they also have programs that, while good in themselves, remained fairly obscure. Shall we share some of our favourites? I shall start!
Max Aaron - Historia de un Amor (2013-2014 season short program) - Max got a lot of flack for this program, and a lot of derision, but I don't really understand why. It holds up well against his other SPs, and though not as polished as Nessun Dorma, retains character and fire, and a lot of flair. Sadly, the program choreographed for the Olympics was not to be shown there, and given Max's habit of not repeating programs, we will not see it again. Still, I should like to see him go back to a Latin theme at some future time.
Joshua Farris - Libertango (2013-2014 season short program) - It was probably a year too early for Joshua to really try a tango-style program, and I distinctly recall several people here feeling uncomfortable at an 18/19 year old attempting an intense tango! I'm not a fan of piano tangos generally, but this was a good one, and one that he choreographed himself with a little help from Damon Allen. This was also the program he had when he had to skate immediately after Jeremy had brought the house down at Nationals, and though he never skated it perfectly cleanly, it still came off well.
Jason Brown - Grand Guignol (2011-2012 season short program) - Probably, IMO, the last really good program/costume combination that he's had. Smooth and sophisticated for a 16/17 year old without crossing the line into being inappropriate. While not technically the most challenging short program he's ever attempted, stylistically it was the one most "out of the box" for him - and it's still one of my all-time favourites.
Artur Gachinski - Flamenco (2013-2014 season short program) - It's no small wonder that this program would be almost forgotten, coming in the Olympic season when the Powers That Be had long made it clear they would eternally punish him for Nice. But it was well-choreographed (I think Jeff Buttle did this one for him) and the theme of the dark flamenco suited him well. I haven't linked a video because I can't find one that doesn't break my heart in every way.
What are some of yours?
