I was faffing around on the internet when I came across a video I had not looked at in a while, and it gave me the idea for this thread.

Some of our skaters have programs of great success, that are replayed again and again, but they also have programs that, while good in themselves, remained fairly obscure. Shall we share some of our favourites? I shall start!

Max Aaron - Historia de un Amor (2013-2014 season short program)
- Max got a lot of flack for this program, and a lot of derision, but I don't really understand why. It holds up well against his other SPs, and though not as polished as Nessun Dorma, retains character and fire, and a lot of flair. Sadly, the program choreographed for the Olympics was not to be shown there, and given Max's habit of not repeating programs, we will not see it again. Still, I should like to see him go back to a Latin theme at some future time.

Joshua Farris - Libertango (2013-2014 season short program) - It was probably a year too early for Joshua to really try a tango-style program, and I distinctly recall several people here feeling uncomfortable at an 18/19 year old attempting an intense tango! I'm not a fan of piano tangos generally, but this was a good one, and one that he choreographed himself with a little help from Damon Allen. This was also the program he had when he had to skate immediately after Jeremy had brought the house down at Nationals, and though he never skated it perfectly cleanly, it still came off well.

Jason Brown - Grand Guignol (2011-2012 season short program) - Probably, IMO, the last really good program/costume combination that he's had. Smooth and sophisticated for a 16/17 year old without crossing the line into being inappropriate. While not technically the most challenging short program he's ever attempted, stylistically it was the one most "out of the box" for him - and it's still one of my all-time favourites.

Artur Gachinski - Flamenco (2013-2014 season short program) - It's no small wonder that this program would be almost forgotten, coming in the Olympic season when the Powers That Be had long made it clear they would eternally punish him for Nice. But it was well-choreographed (I think Jeff Buttle did this one for him) and the theme of the dark flamenco suited him well. I haven't linked a video because I can't find one that doesn't break my heart in every way.

What are some of yours?

This thread lends itself to answers by long time fans commenting about skaters with long careers; but I hope you will get lots of answers from more modern times. Thank you for it, karne.

:yahoo:

Here are my most fondly remembered programs that many people did not love.

Jayne Torvill & Christopher Dean
1983 Worlds Rock n Roll OSP -

You don't see this program discussed often. It is a kooky mix of what sounds like a cover version of Variations on a theme by Paganini with late 1950's style rock n roll. Just wonderful.

Marina Klimova & Sergei Ponomarenko
1987 Worlds FD
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9hDLvAdcWg

People rave about their Golden Waltz OD at 1987 Worlds, but the audience loved their FD just as much; yet it is nearly forgotten. They should have won 1987 Worlds with this dance.

Maia Usova & Alexander Zhulin
1988 Europeans FD Indian Temple Dance
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qho2DLoqbZk

I love this program, but I never would have seen it if Usova and Zhulin had not unexpectedly been assigned to make their senior debut at Europeans in 1988 replacing Klimova & Ponomarenko. The program is best seen with Toller Cranston's wonderful rant about their costumes.

Isabelle & Paul Duchesnay
1991 Europeans FD Reflections
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zxqaszjDTI

This program was truly ahead of its time. It represents dance without any male female romantic interaction and outraged traditionalists. The team replaced it with Missing II at Worlds, but I really like this program better.

Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir
2009 4CC's Pink Floyd FD
http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q...E0E10045B5EFF97A5B2CE0E10045B5EFF9&FORM=VIRE8

It was amazing that Tessa was able to skate this program when she was barely recovered from surgery. And Skate Canada :ddevil: hated their costumes and made them change to basic black for Worlds, but I feel that the 4C's costumes were better for Pink Floyd. The program had some of their most interesting lifts ever, and showed that they were capable of a broad range of FD subjects.

Meryl Davis & Charlie White
2008 Skate Canada Charleston OD
Happy Feet "Happy Feet"by Jack Yellen and Milton Ager; 20's Piano original composition by Joe Laduke
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoFCXvofq8w

This non-stop program was choreographed to stretch the team's technical capabilities while portraying distinct characters. It did make them work. They struggled with it all season. The Skate Canada version perhaps most clearly shows the college kid with his somewhat lower class date doing the Charleston, probably in a rather seedy club. They won the Skate Canada OD ahead of Pechalat and Bourzat with this dance.

2011 Worlds FD
Il Postino by Luis Bacalov; Payadora (Forever Tango) by Lisandro Adrover; Recuerdo (Forever Tango) by Lisandro Adrover
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWwz1BQBFt4

People hated this program, but it won worlds. The more I watch it, the better I like its complexity and subtlety and appreciate a tango with no bandoneon music.

Tanith Belbin & Ben Agosto
2007-08 Skate America Folk Dance OD
Cotton Eyed Joe, Country Waltz, Appalachian Hoedown by Bluegrass
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meW6n6wSwVU

Tanith and Ben really worked hard to produce this program to portray classic American folk dance, and succeeded. However, US powers that be insisted it was not right, and needed to be shifted to Texas from Applachia. They fiddled around with it all year, but the first version was most true to its subject, and I remember it fondly.

2006-07 Worlds FD Amélie soundtrack
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wd4mfxxsMx8

After their planned "That's Entertainment" program bombed both with audiences and judges on the GP, Tanith and Ben quickly rolled out their Amélie program for the second half of the season. It was received with more approval, but many people did not get it, possibly in part because they had never seen the movie. It is my favorite program to Amélie ever, and IMO best represents the spirit of that movie.

Evgeni Plushenko: Saint-Saens medley
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fydd6Pjjho0

I doubt all that many people ever saw this, as he never skated it at Euros, but it is actually one of my favourite programs of his. Also, I remember ciriticism at the time for the music cuts, but I really enjoyed it, and especially since the music is by the same composer, to me, it had a good "feel" to it (but then, I've discovered I've got a seemingly relatively high tolerance level for medleys, so... :))

Brian Joubert: Inception
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u0b3o5APrQ

This more for the potential than what was realised. The first performance of a program is seldom the best, but since the only other time he skated it, he was suffering the aftereffects of illness, that skate lacked energy, power and therefore conviction, sadly this remains the best in terms of feel for the music and program.

Gracie Gold-Hernando's Hideaway (2012-13 SP)
http://youtu.be/XEqW03xY4U8
It's not the most polished or refined program, but it brings out her sass and fire moreso than anything she's had since. Just a really fun program from her pre-Frank days.

Mao Asada's Fantaisie-Impromptu (2008-2009? FS)
http://youtu.be/Cp5aoeVYcHg
This is my favorite Mao program and I have no idea why.

I have more, but I gotta run.

Thank you Doris for pointing out Davis and White's Tango FD: after The Bat, it is probably my favourite program of theirs, I could never understand those who criticized it  It is simply perfect: sophisticated, original and unusual yet with a wonderful dose of tango passion! (And thank you Doris as always for a splendid post!)

I would personally put forward Caro's 2011 FS (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RMIoHusJm7I): not her best season technically at all, and even when she skated it well there were many mistakes, but the program itself remains amazing

I can't believe I don't remember Gracie's SP but, you're right. It was great! Thanks for posting.

Definitely Mao Asada's 2014 Olympic freeskate! If I'd known nothing about the short program results and saw all the freeskates without the scores, I would have bet money this was the gold medal winning skate. I rarely call "wuzrobbed" but Mao's PCS was insultingly low and it's pretty clear to me that she was being penalized for not making it into the final group. I would have expected that under 6.0 but there's no excuse for that under IJS.
Enjoy the masterpiece that was that performance!

One for me, Daisuke's "Beatles Medley". His 2013 NHK performance is the only time any skater or performance has made me teary-eyed.

I don't think Mao's Fantasie Impromptu is underrate, it is one of her best program actually.

To answer the question for me , Yuzuru's notre dame de paris. It is a better program than Romeo and Juliet 2 + Phantom of the Opera, but never performed to its potential.

It's underrated in terms of how low it scored.

Akiko Suzuki - West Side Story, Riverdance, Dark Eyes. I could list Akiko's entire body of work but let's start here.

Yuna Kim - El Tango de Roxanne, Scheherezade. Young and unpolished Yuna, but Yuna at her brightest.

Mao Asada - Claire de Lune, Scheherezade, Liebestraum. Light, twinkly, perfect.

Carolina Kostner - Transylvanian Lullaby, Prélude à l'Après-Midi d'un Faune. When Lori Nichol programs were actually inspired, they were great.

Michelle Kwan Taj Mahal, A Day In The Life, The Miraculous Mandarin. Not sure what these categorize as. Programs that deserved better?

Jeremy Abbott - Eight Seasons. Gentle reminder that difficult transitions in a program existed before Hanyu!!

Alexander Johnson - Eleanor Rigby. Just beautiful.

I don't know about underrated but people ought to see these programs if they haven't already.
