The problem, I believe, is not in Swan Lake, or Carmen, or Malaguena., but in the Sport of Figure Skating itself. The skating world has not gone beyond the 19th century ballet shtick. Instead of creating its own art form, figure skating just borrows from other art forms and nothing is original in figure skating.
Except for the sitzspin and the camel spin, figure skating hasn't created any elements that were not already done in other artforms. The lifts in Pairs are taken right out of the old black and white movies featuring adagio teams.
Those old chestnuts like Swan Lake, Carmen and Malaguena are very easy to interpret at least superficially. I think it's only Kwan who reaches out for different music and should continue to do so. Her Sher did not really suit her and Tosca, although she did an original interpretation, is not the vehicle one expects from her.
Just my thoughts on the ho hum music in figure skating. - Maybe movie bvackground music is the way to go.
