One more parallel podium

This one is almost too easy:

GOLD: Michelle Kwan
SILVER: Russian with multiple European titles
BRONZE: Russian with multiple European titles

Here's a link (pdf) that should help with the other questions.

Hm. 1998 and 2000 Worlds would fit, in fact the two Russians in question were exactly the same, Irina Slutskaya silver and Maria Butyrskaya bronze. Although Butyrskaya only had one of her European titles as of 1998. Did they ever stand on the podium with MK in the opposite order?

If we're going to do identical podiums, how about:

Gold: Michelle Kwan
Silver: Lu Chen
Bronze: Irina Slutskaya

and

Gold: Sarah Hughes
Silver: Irina Slutskaya
Bronze: Michelle Kwan

Although Butyrskaya only had one of her European titles as of 1998.
That's right, but I didn't realize that the clues identifying the skaters had to be contemporaneous to the podium date.

Did they ever stand on the podium with MK in the opposite order?
No, though they nearly repeated the same order at 2001 Worlds (Maria was 4th; Sarah Hughes 3rd).

Another similar set of parallel podiums (same event) would have been:

GOLD: Russian World Champion
SILVER: Michelle Kwan
BRONZE: First-time world medalist

If we're going to do identical podiums, how about:

Gold: Michelle Kwan
Silver: Lu Chen
Bronze: Irina Slutskaya

That would be 1996 Worlds for one -- and maybe the Champions Series final or a GP event that season?

Gold: Sarah Hughes
Silver: Irina Slutskaya
Bronze: Michelle Kwan

That one is easy, unfortunately. Those are the only two times Sarah beat Michelle -- and Irina. 2001 Skate Canada first, then a repeat of the podium at the SLC Olympics 3 months later.

Here's a tough one...

Gold- American girl (both of whom won their national titles on odd number years)
Silver- posed for playboy (both of whom competed in lillehammer)
Bronze- rumored to have landed the triple axel in practice

I guess...you guys have to guess the two events, and the names of the competitors...

Good luck!

The only person I can think of who was rumoured to land the 3axel in practice was Surya Bonaly. The other two 3axelers, Harding and Ito, actually landed them in comps. So if Surya has bronze... and is silver Witt? I know she posed for playboy, and competed in lillehammer. And I think the same applies to Szewczenko? (I can't remember if she apparently posed or not.) Gold - I'm guessing Harding, Kerrigan or Yamagchi. But I have no idea what the podiums are from, if any of these skaters are right. Lol

You got the two playboy posers right. Kristi won her National title during an even number year, so she's out..

These podium finishes took place eleven years apart, by the way...if that helps.

This is fun!!!

1) Here's a tough one...

Gold- American girl (both of whom won their national titles on odd number years)
Silver- posed for playboy (both of whom competed in lillehammer)
Bronze- rumored to have landed the triple axel in practice

1986 World Championships
Gold - Debi Thomas, USA
(86, 88 National Champion) (wait, those aren't odd years, but I'll stick with this answer)
Silver - Katarina Witt
Bronze - Tiffany Chin

and
1982 World Championships
Gold - Elaine Zayak, USA
(81 National Champion)
Silver - Katarina Witt, GDR
Bronze - Claudia Kristofics-Binder, AUT
(but I know absolutely nothing about this skater)

2) If we're going to do identical podiums, how about:

Gold: Michelle Kwan
Silver: Lu Chen
Bronze: Irina Slutskaya

Answer: 1995 Skate America and 1996 World Championships

3)
1992 World Junior Championships
Gold: 17-year-old French girl - Laetitia Hubert
Silver: Lisa Ervin
Bronze: Lu Chen

If there was another event where this was the outcome, then:

1991 World Junior Championships
Gold: 17-year-old French girl - Surya Bonaly
Silver: Lisa Ervin
Bronze: Lu Chen

This is a guess - I know that Surya was the 91 World Jr. Champion and that Lisa Ervin won multiple silver medals at Jr. Worlds, but I don't remember if LuLu won more than 1 medal at Jr. Worlds.

4)
1990 World Junior Championships
Gold: Yuka Sato
Silver: Surya Bonaly
Bronze: clockwise-rotating German girl named Tanja - Tanja Krienke (sp?)

1994 World Championships
Gold: Yuka Sato
Silver: Surya Bonaly
Bronze: clockwise-rotating German girl named Tanja - Tanja Szchevchenko (sp?)

This one is driving me crazy! I too was thinking the 82 and 86 Worlds, those are out as they were only 4 years apart, and Witt was the runner-up both times. I shouldn't think it would be THAT hard to find events where Witt was 2nd (and actually Tanja S. wasn't 2nd in things that many times either) but every thing I can come up with, the gold or bronze medallists don't match.

Am trying to come up with a few "parallel podium" brainteasers of my own, but I am finding THAT very difficult as well. I am pulling out my whole archive collection (and pretty soon my hair as well! ) but I am determined that I am going to come up with SOMETHING..... :D

This is difficult! lol. Okay, so the two silvers are Witt and Szewczenko. 11 years apart - well, Witt was second in the 82 Worlds wasn't she? Although I can't remember who won. Was it Sumners (an American girl)? Don't know who would be 3rd though. If 82 is right, that means the second podium is 93. Szewczenko second, an American (Kerrigan?) first, Bonaly third? I have no idea what the competition was though.

Am I close, at all? :)

I think this would be Lipinski, Szewczenko, and Butyrskaya at the 1997-98 Champions Series Final.

So would hrmsk8ngnut's 1986 Worlds answer work for the other one?

BTW, hrmsk8ngnut's Junior Worlds answers for my initial post are also correct.

I was thinking Lipinski, Szewczenko, and Butyrskaya too, but had no clue who the other American girl would be, if they won the national title on an odd year.

Gold-first and last name end with a
Silver-Sasha Cohen
Bronze- have not been judged under CoP yet

you guys rock =P

97 GPF is correct...

I won't give up the other one yet LOL. Think of the final clue. It'll help. I think only two women landed the 3A in the 80's. One was Midori (and that was in competition), and the other was rumoured...although there are videotapes of her landing them in practice... =)

You're correct! LOL

Debi and Tara were the Americans (oops i was wrong...Debi lost the Odd number national title... ), Kat and Tanja posed for playboy, and Tiffany and Maria have landed the 3A in practice.

Ah-haa!! See, the Odd Number National threw me off a bit. That plus the fact that I never knew that Maria "Shaky Knees" Butrsaya landed a triple axel in practice, nor could have really imagined that she could have.....

I think I know one of the podiums:

Gold - first and last name end with a = Viktoria Volchkova
Silver - Sasha Cohen
Bronze - have not been judged under COP yet = Irina Slutskaya.

2002-2003 Cup of Russia. :D

Is that right?

The other podium - I'm thinking Michelle Kwan for bronze, as she hasn't been judged under COP yet either. First place could be Slutskaya or Butyrskaya maybe... not sure what competition it was though.
