One thing I've always been curious about, who typically cuts the music? The skater? The choreographer?

Most rinks have at least one person who cuts music for pretty much everyone there; I'm not sure if it works like that for elite skaters, but it's been that way at most rinks I've been to. Some people (like me) cut their own music.

This is obviously who has created and still continues creating, rather than simply cutting music for many elite level skaters. Tarasova introduced him to viewers while commentating Worlds and talked a bit to him. He said he still creates, like, two hundred programs a year :)eek:), so it must be not only for elite skaters.

Of course, I imagine there are skaters who cut music for themselves, even elite level ones, like Charlie White, and other cases when choreographers do that. Like, Weaver/Poje told that Tchernyshev put their FD music together for them.

Other skaters just get someone they know to do it for them. Lambiel used (and, very likely, still uses) his friend's help - I don't know whether that friend is connected to music somehow, or just knows how to use the appropriate program better than Stephane himself :). Although the help from that friend was/is more technical than anything indeed, as it seems that Stephane usually has an idea of how he wants the cuts to be put together. Then, Shae Lynn Bourne got help from her husband who is a musician in putting music together for Hanyu's 'Semei' FS. Etc.

Finally, I just recently got to know that there are companies that sell ready-made music cuts to skaters who simply can't afford good specialists, but don't feel competent enough (along with their coaches and choreographers) to do the cutting for themselves. That is how Angelina Kuchvalska and her coach got her last Tango-Romeo and Juliet FS music which many found so horrible. I bet there are many other skaters who get their music that way.

I wonder if she changed the tango to Romeo and Juliet so she wouldn't have to deal with the vocals? I noticed that El Tango de Roxanne has vocals 1 minute into the music. Still, like many other people, I thought the two music choices didn't go together at all.

Like I said, she personally did not change, cut or put together anything. The music was bought from a company that puts together music for skaters. Apparently it already had this change from El Tango de Roxanne to Romeo and Juliet.

Anyone looking for creative music ideas could do a lot worse than listen to Radio Fip for 2 hours a day. Stunning, eclectic and surprising stuff from opera to contemporary classical to pop of all eras and world music - I never listen without writing down a few tracks to download. Lots of great potential skating music: http://www.fipradio.fr/player.

There are instrumental versions of Roxanne as well - like the one Plush used.

It's too bad Angelina didn't skate to that instead of having R & J shoehorned in; most instrumental versions of it are around the length required for the senior ladies' free skate anyway.

It's a peculiar combination, no doubt - I don't mind it as much as most people, though.

It was funny last year when I first came across it. I had been out of the room, and when I came back it was in the middle of the program, and I couldn't quite place my finger on the music though it sounded awfully familiar. "That music... " I said. "It's Roxanne," said my husband. "No it isn't!" I protested.- "They said it was," said my husband. And then I recalled that "oh, yes, it's Romeo and Juliet." And a moment later the music changed "Now that is Roxanne." It was unexpected to say the least.:)

PJ Kwong interviewed Hugo Chouinard about his music editing business in February. It was an interesting listen: http://www.openkwongdore.com/2016/02/15/episode-1-hugo-chouinard

At the lower levels I think it varies. I always cut my own music. My coach could have done it, but I just really like it. I ended up doing some for friends and now I still edit music for stage performances. It's interesting the random skills you can pick up from skating - music editing, choreo, beading and costume construction, etc. Christine Brennan talks about music and the lengthes elite skaters will go to get the perfect music cut in one of her books. IIRC, Audrey Weisiger (sp?) once hired musicians to record a section for a Michael Weiss program.

Alexia Paganini did a new SP at Gardena.

Alexia Paganini USA
SP: "On Golden Pond"

Is that going to become a warhorse?

Like there are other stage musicals and ballets where you can find music! Like Rent! Rent is edgy cool and I can see someone like Ashley skate to "Rent" from the musical Rent.

And there's a few songs from "Cats" that could work. Like "The Rum Tum Tugger" and "Macavity."

Like choosing songs for skating should be like reading the directions of a shampoo bottle: "Wash rinse repeat..." "Carmen, R&J, POTO, and repeat."

Like I've said a lot, some skaters should ask fans for suggestions. Like we're more than happy to give suggestions.

Though there are some skaters that we can be assured will NEVER choose warhorses. Like Kevin Reynolds.

Dear God, ENOUGH WITH ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER. I said this here a few years ago, but it bears repeating. When I die I am thinking of having my gravestone read, "He could be a beeyutch, but at least he never saw Cats"!!!

I hope Marin Honda's Romeo and Juliet is Prokofiev's. It's quite dramatic and would suit her.

I personally LOVE "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." I memorized all the colors.

Listen, I'm all for people loving what they love and being lovely about it. I actually really like the score of Evita. It's just I'm sick of hearing Phantom.

Why doesn't anyone use one of the finest Broadway scores of the last few years: A Light in the Piazza. This is my favorite song from the show, Dividing Day:
