Favorite Documentaries- Short and Long Subject

There have been many "favorite movie" posts lately... but we have ignored documentaries. I have much less experience in this genre, but I really enjoy when I do get an opportunity to see a good documentary.

Here are a few of my favorites

    Startup.com http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0256408/

    Bowling for Columbine http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0310793/

    Educating Peter http://www.stateart.com/productions/...ducatingpeter/

    Living Dolls http://www.documentarychannel.ca/pro...asp?showID=119

    Balancing Act http://www.documentarychannel.ca/doc...g%20Act&id=160

    Winged Migration http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0301727/

If I can think of more I'll add on to the list

What an excellent subject! The CBC produces many wonderful documentaries. We have a series entitled "Life and Times" many skaters such as Brian Orser, Toller Cranston, Kurt Browning and Barbara Ann Scott have been featured.

As for movies, I also enjoyed Bowling for Columbine. The Fog of War is another excellent documentary about the Viet Nam war.

I love the documentary on Sonja Henie...I think that it is called "Queen of Shadows"...I could be getting it mixed up with the book too. I saw it on HBO one time and that is how I discovered her.

    National Geographic:
    Polar Bear Documentary
    Shark Documentary

LOVE Bowling for Columbine...I went there and my folks still live right down the road from the school

    Living Dolls was very fascinating.

I am not sure if LETTERS HOME FROM VIETNAM is technically a documentary...it is all actors and actresses reading actual letters sent home from soldiers (male and female) in Vietnam...very harrowing. My Social Studies teacher showed it to us in my senior year. It was based on the book.

BTW - Shark Week is coming up on Dicovery channel on Sunday, July, 25! I love sharks. Dream vacation number 2 is to diving with Great Whites off the coast of California, or Africa. I can't wait for this series! It is almost as exciting as the skating season!

I saw a wonderful documentary a few years ago about a Soviet girl. It began when she was very young (around 5 I think) and her father would film her and discuss things with her on every birthday. They continued this until the girl was much older. It was extremely interesting and it really was a great way to understand what life was like for a family (and particularly a young girl) in the tumultuous 80-90s in the Soviet Union. I can't remember the name, but if anyone has seen it please do tell me!

Like Liz, I don't really have a lot to offer when it comes to discussing this genre. But, here is one that I did enjoy:

"Shackleton" - A must see for history buffs. It details Shackleton's famous (and utterly disasterous) last expedition to Antarctica. Their ship gets trapped in a giant sheet of ice and the story after that is so compelling.

I thought of another over the weekend...well, my weekend...I have a weird work week.

I just recently saw one on HBO about jockeys and how they decimate their bodies to stay under the racing weights. It was very sad.
