Glad to see that Ted Barton is modelling accessibility of video in his own domain of BC/Yukon....Go Ted!:hap10:

Now if only Skate Ontario would emulate...

And perhaps Skate Canada could consider requiring video streaming for the national super series events in future years...

Transparency, opportunities for skaters and coaches to watch and learn what's happening elsewhere, and to a chance to grow the fan base....

Can we solve this please?

Thanks for your report Mango. Lots of great info here. I love Piper and Paul's sp and 'the look'. Mr. Rice is going to be thrilled when he sees Paul's new outfit, as it looks like he is channeling his inner, Gino Vannelli. ;)

I like their outfits but I am not sure who Gino Vannelli is. i guess time to google.

Not sure about Skate Ontario, but from my understanding Skate Canada COS has a deal with JB Videos to sell videos of performances to skaters, their coaches, and families. They have a similar deal with Danielle Earl for photos for certain events. So you don't normally get photos, and you are likely to only get limited video streaming. Stephen Bell and Sean McKinnon have provided photos recently but the norm is just Danielle's business charging a nice fee. Someone once told me the price for videos but I can't recall. But this means you get only streaming of one rink in an event like Summer Skate, the only event that's live streamed anyways. Patinage Québec and Skate Canada BC/YK do a much much better job. SC BC/YK even puts up individual videos on YouTube, just like the ISU JGP. Ted has done a fantastic job.

I know privacy is always a concern at these events with all those young kids competing. But then you look at SC BC/YK and how they get permission and you see that it can work. In the end, as you've mentioned, it helps the skaters promote themselves and maybe get sponsors too. It's convenient if the videos are already up. Otherwise they have to buy videos and put them up themselves. I guess mommy and daddy need to keep those wallets open.

Your loss Skater Boy...lol. Gino Vannelli was a 70's/80's Montreal singer/songwriter, who is now a producer I believe. He totally captures this era in his clothing and look as per the video.

Mr. Rice informed us last year that he had to do a dance number to Gino's song, "I Just Wanna Stop".

The thing is, video is mandatory for judging above a certain level. Certainly, for pre-juvenile and up. So the video companies are on contract anyway, and selling copies to parents is additional revenue. I suspect that most parents would still buy the videos of their kids rather than get them from the internet as the quality is very high on the purchased electronic files.

Buying the videos is really helpful for the kids to understand the judges' assessments. Video is used a great deal in both on and off-ice training these days, and simulations of competitions. So, coaches and kids are looking for the competition videos as important training information rather then than as a souvenir. We've found that we get a lot of insight even looking back a year later. We can get a more objective picture of progress and see how our kids and their coaches were managing the competition environment.

With the greater separation of the competitive track from the STARskate recreational and assessment track, video is not used in judging the lower levels of STARStake. But the companies usually video all of those as well. It suggests the revenue from parent purchases is significant.

Regarding privacy, the media permissions required are already in place through the standard registration form information that follows Skate Canada and section technical requirements for events. This is why one sees podium and on ice shots on the websites that include very young skaters.

But I would agree that for the lowest STARskate levels, where kids are only given a private gold, silver, bronze or merit absolute assessment, and there is no ranking, it would be inconsistent and inappropriate to post video. And perhaps this is one of the reasons why Skate Canada has decided to prohibit video based judging at these levels.

TGee I am aware of the requirement of video for judging. My query is, why doesn't this translate to live streaming? If not privacy, then cost? Surely the province with the most skaters has some money for that. :confused2: Oh well, we can just appreciate all the up and comers from other provinces.

Sounds like we're thinking the same way. . .

It may be cost issue....the purchases of videos are likely subsidizing the mandatory recording for judging.

Or or it may be that the need for multi-year contracts to run out.

But my bet is on inertia, and hesitation to move forward on new things until the Skate Ontario integration is completed.

But the push for video examples from Skate Canada is high. They just made video examples from STAR 1 - 5 of skills and free skate elements available publicly through Vimeo. And they provide gold, silver and bronze level examples with related judging sheets for each one at each level. So, I expect things will change, ....just when.....

Skater Boy......I am shocked. In fact, I just want to stop ;) and tell you about Dreamy Gino Vannelli. He was extremely popular in the late 70's and into the 80's. His song "Living Inside Myself" was my audition piece and I still owe him a muffin basket for helping launch my career by recording that song. It wasn't as big a hit as I just wanna stop, but it was my favorite song because I was such a dorky loner when I was younger and I related to it in many ways. I know Patrick doesn't like using lyrics but, in my dreams, he skates to this song in an exhibition because he's a skater that can really do justice to Gino's smooth and powerful voice.

Here's "Living Inside Myself" I was in 10th grade when this song came out WAY back in 1981. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOKLQPPMPdM

I don't need to google or watch the vid (although slightly older than Mr Rice ;)) Strictly from memory:

I am looooost, living inside myself, living inside this shell, living without your love....

Paul needs a lot more hair to be full on Gino Vannelli:biggrin: think Jason Brown's natural hair....

Jason with his hair down is exactly how I remember Gino. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71stCp-AB0L._SL1000_.jpg
Hopefully Jason will have an updated wardrobe.

Twitter user Two for the Ice, who reports on North American pairs and ice dancers, wrote up a post based on today's conference calls with Tessa Virtue / Scott Moir and Meagan Duhamel / Eric Radford.

http://www.twofortheice.com/virtue-moir-duhamel-radford-2016-skate-canada-international/

TL;DR:
Tessa & Scott have worked with David Wilson to improve their FD and now skate for Montreal International School of Skating instead of Ilderton's club.

Meagan & Eric have changed the order of their SP elements to twist, 3Lz, throw 3A, with a new lift exit. Finlandia sucked because of jet lag and new skates.

thanks mango. such interesting details about the SP layout. I shared the news in the D/R 3peat thread as some people were complaining about the throw... cannot wait to see the new layout (and if they land it!)

Gabby Daleman is in reach of podium, 4th at Skate America with a SB of 64.49... Looks like this one will be down to the wire : Less than 1.25 points between competitors in 2nd and 5th place. :cheer:

And another line to note that CBC's livestream is coming from the Ice Network, including their commentary.

CBC posted two short preview montages...

Gabby just skated a strong SP (protocols). Her 3Lz was a bit too powerful, leading to a downgraded 3T being tacked on. Second highest BV of the night, third highest TES, fourth highest PCS, fourth in the SP. Not a terrible start.

Now we wait for Julianne and Charlie.
