I threw the towel in on this one. Too many good choices. So, I put Newfoundland in for show.

The Indiana Derby is tonight, at 9:15. The weather is supposed to be 33, tops. Brrrrrrrrr.....

I was shocked he won! Wow! He looked well beaten, then put it in another gear.

Last night i went to the Indiana Derby and had a blast. I had $25 to win on Sir Shackleton and Pollard's Vision. Lost $50 on that but enjoyed myself anyways. I even met a couple from my town who love racing. We exchanged phone numbers and will get together.

How cool is that? :)

This year, only 6,839 attended the Indiana Derby. Two years ago I think around 9,000 people went. It was much more crowded, too. I could barely see some of the undercard, and when the Derby went off I couldn't see anything.

This year I easily got a spot on the rail almost across the finish line. Don't know why there was a decrease.

The Breeders Cup hs completely changed how horses are raced during the season. The tope horses are prepped towards the Breeders Cup all year, and the other races except for the few remaining classics go unnoticed to horse racing's loss.

I had a great time at Belmont this past Saturday. There were FOUR Grade 1 races, all preps for the Breeders Cup.

One of my all-time favorite mares, Riskaverse, won the Flower Bowl. Pico Central won the Vosburgh, and 3YO Kitten's Joy beat older horses running 1.5 miles on the lawn for the first time. Of course, the best was yet to come when Funny Cide, after fading at the top of the stretch, made a late charge, passing Cliff's Edge and Newfoundland, and won the Jockey Club Gold Cup.

I heard that Cliff's Edge broke a bone in his leg during the race and will have to have surgery, then will retire to stud.

I'd love to see the race at Keeneland with Azeri and Mayo on the Side. Azeri seems to be returning to her former great form, should be a good one!

I know why she retired--I started following her. I swear I jinx a horse into retirement once I begin watching them.

European superstar Bago is NOT going to the Breeders' Cup.

Dance With Ravens, a son out of Dance Smartly, just won the G2 Grey Breeders' Cup Stakes in Canada. He's now 3(1-1-1) $223,820. He might be going to the BC!

i also think azeri should run in the distaff... i bet she'd win there...

i love FC! i'm so happy he won the jockey gold cup... it was an exciting race from start to finish from what i read.. only wish i could have seen it. this horse brought me into horseracing... before he won the derby i didn't follow it at all.. though have always loved horses.

and it's a darn shame smarty jones retired before hitting the peak of his form. somehow the fact that money was more important than his fame and glory as a racehorse doesn't surprise me. money/greed always wins out in the end over anything else period. even the interests of the fans pleading for him to continue running fell on deaf ears. the poor trainer will probably never have another smarty caliber type horse under his tutelage again... smarty could have been his once in a lifetime horse. all that down the drain.

the BC classic is shaping up to be quite a field in the classic and distaff division... the sprint seems to have very notable horse too, though don't follow the sprints as much. wish they'd bring back the 1 1/2 and 2 mile races. wonder why they fell to the wayside. nobody like to watch 'em? as a result, horses are built these days more for speed and are becoming more fragile and injury prone. we are seeing these effects now.... and it's no coincidence, imo. if they keep up with how they're breeding those racehorses, then i'd say we'll be lucky to see an injury free horse run beyond a year pretty soon before something breaks down. and excuse me, but if they are raced wo/ serious injures past the 3-4 year, then they are so lightly raced that they hardly have a huge fan base... birdstone is one horse whose trainer will only race him maybe 3 times a year... and pleasantly perfect is 6 already and he's just starting to attract attention... and then as soon as the attention begins, he's going to stud right after the BC classic. :rolleye:
