As a pilot and aircraft mechanic, this type of accident is sickening. There was no reason to not declare an emergency while in the holding pattern they were put into. There is never a reason to run out of fuel with all the gages, mechanical and computer backups, etc. There are two pilots that are supposed to watch over things and obey the warning indicators....where were they mentally? Did they not want to face disipline for not having enough fuel? There are very few recorded incidents where airliners run out of fuel.

Ironically, in one, the idiot pilots were declared heros by all of Canada and given awards. A flight from Canada to Lisbon ended well when the pilots made it to the Azores , gliding in to a hard landing. They were loosing a gallon a second due to a fuel leak caused by a stupid maintenance mistake. Instead of following the manual and shutting down the engine on the leak side, they activated the cross feed pump and pumped all the fuel from the good side to the leak side. They couldnt bring themselves to follow the manual and shut down the engine on the leak side, which would have given them pleanty of range. They kept pumping fuel from the full wing to the empty wing and out the plane. Till it became a glider. The airline paid the largest fine in Canadian airliner history for the mistake, the pilots were condemned in the official accident reports, but at least the Azores were there. And the manuals and computers were changed on many Airbus models so that pilots would be more apt to follow the book. Further ironically, the two pilots broke the worlds record for gliding an airliner to a safe landing after running out of fuel, set by two Air Canada pilots in ...what? 1983?
