60 minutes tonight is covering the abuse of young ladies in gymnastics. :(
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/team-usa-doctor-allegedly-disguised-sexual-abuse-as-treatments/

“I believe that at the end of the day, there are members of every single Olympic team since 1996 [Nassar] did this to.” Attorney John Manly

why didn't those girls tell their parents? I would never let an old man touch me like that. Even a 9-10 year old girl would know the difference. "It was treatment. You didn't complain about treatment?" Geezus.

Are you freaking serious? You're victim-blaming children?

of course I am not! I'm just saying they are stupid for not speaking up. If a man is touching you funny, and these girls were teenagers right? at the time, why not say something? I would personally tell my parents, and my parents will make that man pay!

You're calling victims of sexual abuse, who were minor children and who were being abused by someone in a position of authority over them, "stupid" for not speaking up. Yes, you're victim-blaming CHILDREN and it's disgusting.

It's easy to say what you "would" do when you're not in that situation.

Unfortunately, it seems this is all too common....witness all the boys that were abused by Catholic priests....or women in the US armed services abused by males above them......it will be interesting to see what the ladies say....

Unfortunately, abuse victims are not limited by age. These predators are in a position of power and trust with the athletes. In most instances, it starts out with an accidental touch and graduates. The victim thinks 'he wouldn't want to hurt me' and mentally denies that the person is being inappropriate. Or they prey on the person's desire for affection and/or approval. People of all ages have been abused - just look at Penn State football, the altar boys abused by priests, etc.... and these were boys who shouldn't expect to be touched at all. Adults are abused by their spouses. With coaches, they need to touch to adjust form etc - so, it's a bit easier to be insidious in behavior.

The topic is not ridiculous.

By the way, in addition to the criminal charges against the doctor (he is also under arrest for possession of child pornography), the Korolis are being sued for running their camp without common sense safeguards to prevent this kind of situation.

Ok, I take back what I said that it's a ridiculous topic, but I don't have anymore input.

I'm glad some justice is being done and this is being brought to light.

I hope topaz emerald never has children or is responsible for children or teenagers. If something awful were to happen, topaz emerald's extremely harmful attitude toward victims of abuse will only do more damage :disapp:.

Lol, I didn't reply to you in the first place because you said you were done with the conversation, but okay.

Personally, I have no problems with exchanges of controversial opinions, but blaming victims of sexual abuse and insulting them because they were abused is never okay, and is severely damaging to their already fragile states of mind. Karne pointed out why your comment was damaging and offensive, and rather than apologizing or taking the opportunity to learn something new or to consider a new perspective, you doubled down by calling these victims of abuse stupid and by saying that you're so much better than them at handling a traumatizing situation you've never experienced.

It's probably better off if your comments, karne's, and mine are all removed from this thread so some actual productive and sympathetic discussion can ensue.

It's sadly not shocking that people hold the views they do on victims of sexual assault - especially where the victims are underage.

My brother is a sexual predator (my parents had NO idea, and I was away in college, like most predators he is able to smooth talk his way into peoples' trust), and barely got a slap on the wrist for what he did, so it doesn't surprise me that it's taken this long for yet another investigation into coaches/staff in US Gymnastics. They'll likely get a fine and probation. For whatever reason our "justice system" protects rapists above their victims. It shouldn't, but it does.

If you think having concern for victims of sexual abuse should just be blown off with "lol snowflake," got to reiterate my sincere hopes that you are not responsible for children or young adults. Anyone can be manipulated or victimized by the various authorities in their life, and sympathy and understanding is so crucial to the healing process.

Though honestly, I'm beginning to think your Breitbart-esque rhetoric is completely insincere - for some reason, you just want to use a figure skating forum as a place to "stir things up" and laugh at people who actually take things like the sexual abuse of minors very seriously.

This has nothing to do with being old or a man...

Everyone can be such a sick minded individual, women too, just like minors, students, doctors... everyone, who has some leverage over another person.

You also don´t just tell these things to someone, as you blame yourself in the first place and are afraid of the consequences if you speak out. The mind of a child works different than of an adult, especially you Americans should know this, after what has happened to Katelyn Nicole in December, but I suppose your media covered this up once again, as always when children are the victim of a crime.

FYI, the Katelyn Nicole case has received a lot of coverage, as do many crimes against children. The US media does NOT cover up crimes against children - they uncover them. It was the media that uncovered the Catholic Church's sex abuse scandal years and years ago.

Unfortunately, not all horrific crimes against children receive as much attention as they probably should in the national media, simply because such crimes are so prevalent and the national media can only choose so many issues to pay attention to. They still receive lots of attention from local media, however.

Please don't take the offensive ramblings of one poster as representative of all Americans :).

Good,

it is important that the world knows about this. I have to admit, the only news I saw about it was in the UK and if you goggle her name, CNN & Co. don´t pop up at all. I hope the sick bastards, will burn in hell and be put in jail. There were people watching her die, they encouraged her ... what a sick world is that? Cybermobbing and abuse of children needs to be put in public every day, until things finally change.

But the truth is, politicians, managers they all do it and nothing is done...

And if someone comes out and tells me that it´s the fault of the child, then I snap.

I am sorry, but I get so angry about this, it should be in the news 24/7 until things change and every person who ever took someone from the street or told a girl to "just do it", be put in jail for a lifetime.

I don't see why 'snowflake' is an insult. A blizzard is made out of snowflakes.

The minors who were abused by this person are the victims. What happened was in no way their fault and implying they were somehow to blame (or stupid) for not speaking up is ridiculous. People like the abuser are manipulative, there is a reason they get away with it for so long. It is not the victims fault.

All I can say is I hope this horrible person is punished and that protocols are put in place to protect young athletes in the future. I hope that it can at least bring the victims some peace.
