SPOILER: Men's Gymnastics All-Around

Paul Hamm won the gold, Dae Un Kim (Korea) won the silver, and Tae Young Yang (Korea) won the bronze. (Looks of great disappointment from the Korean team as Hamm nailed his high bar routine (9.837) to edge out Kim by .012 of a point and Yang by .049 of a point. What's the statistical significance of that over six events?) Hamm received a 9.137 on the vault, which made it a squeaker. The Korean men were very strong on rings, with 9.7+ scores. Brett McClure came in 9th.

The CBC guy in the studio asked the two commentators whether Hamm got the score on his reputation. They both said that while his reputation was great, his start value was a 10 and he had few deductions. They replayed the routine to make their point, and discussed his three release move, great form, and stuck landing. It was a fabulous routine. I can't wait to see the coverage tonight!

First all-around gold for an American since 1904, when only Americans competed in St. Louis. First all-around medals for Korea -- two in one game!

From the scores it looks a like a routine performed well with medium difficulty would have given him the gold easily.

From the looks of things, the Spaniard and the Romanian could've easily taken gold, as well!

WOW - I just finished watching this competition and I must say Paul Hamm was magnificent. I thought it was all over after the Vault. I admire him so much for putting that behind him and stepping up to give two of his best performances ever on the Parallel and High Bars. What a great moment....and one of the biggest nail-biters I can recall!

Ok that was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen... I went from screaming and thinking it was all over to jumping up and down and routing for other people to fall (I know that sounds mean, and I didnt really want them to fall, but just a little).

You would think there would be extra deductions if the judge has to keep you from rolling off the platform

OK, I gotta confess.....I knew that Paul won but I didn't know how it happened. So as I am watching it all unfold tonight, I was on the floor after Paul's vault, I was freaking out about all the little mistakes from others, and I absolutely BAWLED when Paul hit his last two sets cold and won the gold! His reaction was just stellar. "No way! NO WAY!!" I think he was stunned! Wow. That was amazing and I couldn't be happier for Paul! I've been a fan of his (and Morgan's) for a while now and he was incredible tonight. He rocked it out and it showed a LOT about him as a man and as an athlete that he put that horrible fall behind him and rocked out Pbars and Hbar. Awesome. That's like, *the* moment of the week for me!!

So, the US men won the team silver, the US women answered with their own silver. Paul just won the AA gold, which US woman will answer that statement?! My early fave, Carly. Let's go USA!!!

AWESOME clutch performance -- and I think anger may have helped him, because Paul looked seriously PO'ed after that vault error. But jeez, how many mistakes did everyone else make for him to climb back up like that? And man -- THAT VOICE!! I was certainly warned about that from a few posters here, but I guess I forgot to brace myself because I couldn't believe it; even for a male gymnast, that is SOME VOICE. Do you suppose the Romanians, Russians, et al, sound like that, too??

I think Brett McClure got a bit ripped off on the high-bar; yes, it had a low start value, but that 9.1 seemed low. Especially when contrasted with the sloppy routine that Ioan Suciu put on that pulled a 9.66!! (Which makes Dragelescu's comment about the judges holding up the Americans even MORE amusing.....)

My personal highlight of the night, as far as individual performance goes, was Marian Draglescu's vault. WOW!! I don't much care for the vault, but that was incredible. I'm looking forward to seeing it again during the individual apparatus finals.

I'm not really happy about Marian and his teammate. They don't think Paul should have been allow to win with a fall and they felt his scores on the last 2 were too high. This coming from someone who got a 9.850 on his vault. Too bad they can't see that Paul was amazing on the parallel and high bar. It was perfect. If they would have given a 10 to Paul I feel it would have been justified and well deserved.

Just a couple of poor sport whiny babies. Ironically, one of them got a gift on the high bar as well.

Wow what a great night of men's gymnastics. Even though I knew the results I was still amazed at the outcome.

He certainly is cute and does one of the best vaults I have ever seen....but what a piss poor attitude! You screwed the moose on that one buddy, let go of the bitterness!

Paul won fair and square. I can't really see how any of his scores were too high. He gave the best Parallel and High Bar peformances of his life and didn't get 10s...but rather 9.837s. He was nailed for the mistake on the vault. And, he received nothing higher than the 9.7 range for three other very solid routines. I fail to see the unfair judgement.

Ditto - I felt that Paul won the competition fair and square! I admired him even more for being able to put what happened on the vault behind and went on to do even better in the rest of the competition. That high bar routine was amazing!

I'm sorry , but for that big of a fall on the vault, that should have been in the 8.6 range.

One thing I noticed was that the men were scored considerably higher than the ladies. What's up with that? It's like pulling teeth for a girl to pull anything over a 9.5 and a lot of guys were regularly scoring 9.6-9.75's with a lot of 9.8s.

Paul landed the vault on his feet so the fall itself was .5 and then there were at least two more tenths (if not more) off for the rest of the vault mess. So according to the gym codes, his score was actually fair. If you want more proof of how the scores work, I can find that tomorrow night and post it here. Paul won fair and square.
