    Actually, that was really funny -- Elena knew the new anthem words, but Anton was actually singing the old words, which now sound ironic to say the least:

    Unbreakable Union of freeborn Republics,
    Great Russia has welded forever to stand.
    Created in struggle by will of the people,
    United and mighty, our Soviet land!
    Refrain:
    Sing to the Motherland, home of the free,
    Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong.
    O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people,
    To Communism's triumph lead us on!

    Through tempests the sunrays of freedom have cheered us,
    Along the new path where great Lenin did lead.
    To a righteous cause he raised up the peoples,
    Inspired them to labor and valorous deed.
    [Or, the old way:
    Be true to the people, thus Stalin has reared us,
    Inspire us to labor and valorous deed!]

    Refrain

    In the vict'ry of Communism's deathless ideal,
    We see the future of our dear land.
    And to her fluttering scarlet banner,
    Selflessly true we always shall stand!

    Canada!(courtesy of Ren & Stimpy)

    (~singing~):Our country reeks of trees
    Our yaks are really large
    And they smell like rotting beef carcasses
    And we have to clean up after them
    And our saddle sores are the best
    We proudly wear women's clothing
    As searing sand blows up our dresses

    And our buzzards they soar overhead
    And poisonous snakes will devour us whole
    Our bones will bleach in the sun
    And we will probably go to hell
    And that is our great reward
    For being the Royal
    Canadian Kilted Yaksmen!

    I've noticed that Asian countries seem to have adopted Western style music for their anthems. I always wonder about this. Why don't these countries have anthems in their own native musical idioms? That would make the medal ceremonies much more interesting. Are there any non-western countries that have non-western style anthems?

    Well, I don't know much about music, but when I hear the anthems of China and Kenya, neither sounds "western" at all. Too stencato. Any music gurus care to comment?

    Maybe there's a bit of bias, but I do like the English national anthem, Land of Hope and Glory. (The music of which was hijacked for the American graduation theme.) You don't usually hear it at sporting events because we usually compete as Great Britain, but in competitions like the Commonwealth Games, we compete as England so you hear the anthem.

    I also like the French one, it's very uplifting, and the Russian one. I can't remember how many anthems go, until I hear them again.

    I thought it was Rule Britannia. Now there's a song!

    When Britain first at Heav'n's command
    Arose from out the azure main;
    This was the charter of the land,
    And guardian angels sang this strain;

    Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves:
    Britons never will be slaves.

    The nations not so blest as thee,
    Shall in their turns to tyrants fall;
    While thou shalt flourish great and free,
    The dread and envy of them all.

    Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
    More dreadful from each foreign stroke;
    As the loud blast that tears the skies,
    Serves but to root thy native oak.

    Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame,
    All their attempts to bend thee down
    Will but arouse thy generous flame;
    But work their woe, and thy renown.

    To thee belongs the rural reign;
    They cities shall with commerce shine;
    All thine shall be the subject main,
    And every shore it circles thine

    The Muses, still with freedom found,
    Shall to thy happy coast repair;
    Blest Isle! With matchless beauty crowned,
    And manly hearts to juide the fair.

    Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves;
    Brittons never will be slaves!

    Ta da!

    I'm so glad somebody started a thread about national anthems. Since the Olympics, I've been listening to them carefully, trying to forget any bias, and decide which ones I like best just as music.

    Have only heard the "big guns" so far, but here's my list of favorites of the ones I've heard--no particular order:
    France
    Greece
    USA
    Great Britain
    Russia
    Kenya
    Canada

    Liked "Waltzing Matilda" better than what the Aussies have now.

    I'd love to hear more of the African, Asian, Southeast Asian, Eastern, and Northern European anthems.

    Off topic, but best thing about the '04 Olympics IMO: How stunningly beautiful Shannon Miller has become. She was always very pretty, but seemed sort of tense (can't imagine why) and girlish. I think she's about 25 now and all I can say is whadda woman! Good for her. I think we should give Shannon Miller her own Personal Anthem for being so cool.

    Shannon Miller has had a nose job and she does look beautiful.

    I've always liked "La Marseillais", and of course I like the "Star Spangled Banner". I don't think the SSB is that hard to sing, as long as the singer has a range of more than one octave. I used to take singing lessons, and to warm up my voice teacher had me sing arpeggios. The first words of the SSB "oh, say can you see" are sung on arpeggios, so I've always found it relatively easy to sing. Same thing with "Oh What a Beautiful Morning".

    Vietnam is a non-Western country that has a non-Western sound. Pretty sure there are more, but that's the only one that comes to mind right now.

    After that Greek lady runner won, I decided I like the Greek anthem.

    After yesterday's crowd antics, I might have to reconsider. (crowds kept race from starting by being loud and taunting the US runners -- who then swept the medals!)
