Maryam Mirzahkhani, the first woman to be awarded the prestigious Fields Medal in mathematics, has died of breast cancer at age 40.

Mirzakhani was born in Tehran, Iran, and she lived in that country before coming to the U.S. to attend graduate school at Harvard University. By then, she was already a star, having won gold medals in the International Mathematical Olympiad in the mid-1990s — after becoming the first girl ever named to Iran's team.

What a gifted and inspiring person Mirzahkhani was. Such a loss that she has passed so soon.

So young to leave, but she shone brightly and opened minds in more ways than one.

Maybe mathematicians relate better to God.

World-Famous Scientist: God Created the Universe
‘The final resolution could be that God is a mathematician.’

Kaku’s conclusion is pretty is clear.

“The final solution resolution could be that God is a mathematician,” says Kaku. “The mind of God, we believe, is cosmic music. The music of strings resonating through 11-dimensional hyperspace.”
