I think Hanyu should take it real slowly now and in no way endanger his ankle for a further injury. There is enough time for him to be in totally perfect fighting condition at the time of the Olympics. It is the Olympics which is important, not competing at the Japanese Nationals although he probably wants to do it and I can understand his reasons for that. Anyway, it´s time for him to be smart and to do what´s best for his health.

Hanyu is the reigning Olympic and World champion, he does not need to be the reigning Japanese champion for his reputation.

I think it is pointless to speculate about Hanyu's injury since we really don't know much. He and his team will decide when the time comes whether it is okay for him to compete at Nationals or not. Injuries happen and as many have pointed out he has a history of them so I would think they know by now how to handle this. Also, they are aware that he does not need to participate in Nationals to be selected to the Olympic team so he does not have to push himself to compete if he is not completely healed.

This season is quite strange to be honest especially for the men. Everything I thought I knew and could rely on to make predictions is falling apart and I decided not to try and think farther than tomorrow

I really have no idea how the Olympics will play out or even who will be going :drama: but I have to say that it does make things a bit more interesting. I just hope that if we are going to be getting any more surprises that they are not injuries ,illnesses or anything harmful to the skaters

Let's get back on topic...which is all the Men's discipline in general- going into the Olympics.
The Nationals of US, Russia and Canada have a far more interesting race going on than Japan, whose men's team is less up for grabs.
How are the top skaters in these countries gearing up? NHK has overturned some of the projections of who may be a front runner for the Olympic spots.
Voronov performing very well, and Jason performing relatively poorly, Adam also performed very well.
How much will these GP wins or losses affect the selection for the team? Will it still depend mostly on their Nationals performance?

I want Lord Samarin to make the team. Ucle Voronov is all good but for me Samarin is the Future 😂😂😂

Aliev and Erokhov are the future I want to see, not Kovtun 2.0.

C'mon, comparing slow Kovtun and the Lord is completely wrong. Erokhov has nice jumps and fine loaded programs with transitions, but he lacks of presentation and musicality, absolutely bland skating. Dima has beautiful skating skills but he was never a consistent skater. In the last competitions I noticed you were explaining Dima's fails because he was injured, but what about two previous seasons? Always up and down, can't show stability in the FS.

For Russia Kolyada is a good choice, because of his technique and spins. Look at horrible and ugly spins of Dima, Lord and Erokhov and compare them with spins of Kolyada or Chen.

And overall, I would say it's actually Dima is the second Kovtun. They're different: Kovtun has gorgeous quads, Dima has amazing skating skills. But both of them can't skate clean free programs, and both are very slow and almost dead at the end.
So Lord Samarin vs. Grandpa Voronov for the second spot!

On the side of the US: Assuming Nathan basically has his spot on the team, the race for the other two is intense so far. Jason had a very good result at SC but then was beaten by Adam at NHK, and there's also Max who won a bronze (and the FS) at COC. Is there any possible scenario in which 4 American men could make the GPF? :eeking:
And while Vincent won't make the Final, he still is the reigning National silver medalist AND he has the quads so we can't count him out yet. I think the results at the GPF will make an impact and some good performances could give a skater momentum going into Nationals.

Four U.S. men in the GPF? Something like this would have to happen

TEB:
Shoma
Max
Javier

SkAm
Nathan
Adam
Maxim Kovtun (or any man not named Boyang or Sergei)
Takahito Mura (same as above)
Boyang
Sergei

Then you have
Shoma - 30 (1st/1st)
Nathan- 30 (1st/1st)
Mikhail - 26 (1st/3rd)
Adam - 26 (2nd/2nd)
Max - 24 (3rd/2nd)
Jason -22 (2nd/4th)
---
Sergei 20 (1st/6th)
Boyang 20 (2nd/5th)

Yeah, it's pretty unlikely. But strange things have been happening in this GP series, so who knows... I really don't expect it.

I think it will end up being Shoma, Nathan, Mikhail, Sergei, Adam, Boyang

I'm pretty sure Vincent still has a slight chance of making the final if he can place at least 2nd in France. It would depend on his score and how the other men do.

He could. It's a longshot and more complicated--as of now--for Vincent than it was for Nathan to do last season. (Nathan was likewise 4th at his first event and then finished 2nd at NHK last season in order to make the GPF). But we have two events left & don't know how the chips will fall.

Vincent left at least 15 points on the table at Cup of China.

Are we really counting them when they're chronically under-rotated?

The only two top US men who are actually rotating their quads are Nathan and Max.

They have to be called first. The question is, will they be, at US Nats? It may make all the difference.

It could make all the difference at U.S. Nationals, but then again it might not make any difference at all. At the Cup of China free skate Vincent got two UR calls and essentially had two falls. He still scored 100 in TES.
