Quote:
Nadya, Out of curiosity, how do the Russian skating fans regard Piseev. (for example, at this point, a lot of US fans are not too thrilled with Phyllis Howard, and a lot of fans at Worlds were booing Cinquanta.) Is he popular in Russia?
How do the skaters regard him?[/quote]
To date, I have not read a single Russian article that had even a luke-warm word to say about Piseev. Everything I have heard was negative to the extreme.

Irina Rodnina once said in an article that she doubted if Piseev's own wife even had affection for him.

Piseev

It's really becoming sick when some people (see the above message) here even mention Piseev's family life to somehow sting him. Grow up!

I also wonder why people here release so much bile talking about Piseev. OK, he said something about the Worlds you didn't like. Isn't he entitled to his own opinions? Why such a violent criticism? By the way, it's not very American to be that violently critical. The violent criticism is, I think, the usual prerogative of steamy and overwhelmed Russians.

Regarding the question about how Piseev is seen by Russian skating fans, you can't really say: noone conducted any polls.
Russian media in general don't like him, but the Russian media is one big mess, and not a very professional and reliable as far as facts are concerned. I know it as a specialist.

As for coaches, judging from the interviews some like him, some not. Tarasova in recent interviews thanked him quite a few times, Linichuk was also favorable of him, Tchaikovskaya used to feud with him for many years, Mishin, if I'm not mistaken, is his friend.

Well, Piseev is a president since the days of the Soviet Union and has been re-elected so many times, so if one has a logic one should conclude that he probably does something right that people still re-elect him after all these years of tirbulations.

Well, the ISU re-elected Speedy..unanimously, and I doubt anyone here likes the way he runs things.

Re: Piseev

yeah, but he was chosen unanimously...meaning that the Figure Skating representatives voted for him too.

Re: Piseev

then the figure skating community wasn't doing a very good job with relation to itself....
everyone is to blame for this scandal....the ISU, the prominent skaters, coaches, judges, everyone....
how is it that skating has survived so long without this coming to a head until now?
well to me it's obvious that a lot more is at stake now than before..... e.g money, endoresements, wide-spread popularity, etc....
it is a shame that such mundane underlying factors would be the straw that broke the camel's back....

Re: Piseev

Russian Fan, When I started this thread, I was looking for some insight as to why he would say what he did, and especially why his medal count didn't add up (2 vs. 5). I was not disputing his right to say it. And I hope I didn't come off that negative about him. I don't know the man. That's why I asked for info about how he was regarded from people who might actually know him-Russian skaters, Russian fans, Russian media, and Russian officials.

Thanks for the info, and I am sorry if I in any way offended you.

Re: Piseev

I haven't talked to a lot of Russians about this, but from what I have heard from fellow skating fans, they don't like him. I've talked to some skaters, and, let me put it that way, they expressed their disagreement with him. One coach once said "It's simple, they [Piseev and the people in the Russian federation who support him] don't like us and we don't like them."

Offended? No

Doris,
Oh, God! No, you did not offend me! Is it that my phrasing makes an impression that I am being offended? And why should I feel offended?

I am sorry...
