New Watchdog Group to Get Rid of Desparate Wives

Quite a discussion on Public Radio. The spokeswoman for the Group (I forget the name but it is influential) named DW, and other TV shows that are harming our children and they are working to pass legislation to prohibit these shows.
My opinion of DW is, it is a comedy which can easily be missed. I suppose these wives should be in the kitchen baking cookies for the children when they come home from school. That's what American stay at home wives do.

When the spokeswoman was questioned about TV advertising, like Cialis which brings in a lot of questions by the kids, she just said that is not what her group is dealing with. (let's not interfere with business.) But if those kids ask their friends they will know what it's all about.

A caller suggested that fast food advertising on TV are making our kids fat and leading them into serious illness. She again said that is not in her purview. It's a morals group not a keep healthy group.

The spokeswoman wouldn't budge about TV advertising, just the immoral shows.

Well, if parents were more like parents were in my childhood days, kids wouldn't be up at 9pm watching tv so they'd have no idea what Desperate Housewives was all about.
I know, times change.....But geez! These "police" drive me nuts. I remember reading something about some group saying that the clouds in Lion King spelled out S*E*X.....for heavens sake, don't these people have more to do than sit and watch the Lion King to make letters out of the clouds in a scene?

Ho hum. Movements like this have been tried before. "Married with Children", the "Simpsons". Married was on for 11 seasons. The Simpsons have been on for 16 seasons and counting (now the longest running show ever). I'm sure there are other examples.

All these groups do is increase the popularity of the shows that they are trying to ban.

The irony is that I don't find Desperate Housewives any more scandalous than The O.C. And the O.C. is about teenagers for goodness sake!

THANK YOU!! You'd think that bedtime got outlawed sometime in the late 70s, the stories you hear anymore.

If people in these groups don't like the content, DON'T WATCH IT. Do their TV's only have minds of their own or something??

You've got to be kidding!!! This is one of the best programs on a non-cable station that I've seen in a long time. Maybe cable should pick it up, they seem to get a large percentage of the viewers anyway. If this weren't so sad, it would be funny.........42

EXACTLY.

Actually, ITA with every word of Skate Sandee's post, and also NJSk8fn regarding bedtimes for kids.

Besides, now that they've finally got a hit, does anyone think ABC is going to let some stupid protest group get in their way?

Isn't your first amendment freedom of speech? Censorship is not a good thing. If you want free speech, you have to be willing to see/hear things that you do not like, and do not agree with. If you don't like a show, you have the freedom to turn it off.

I agree that if parents have a problem with a TV program, its their responsibility to make sure kids dont watch it. I dont know many children who would even find it entertaining.... Desperate Housewives isnt an ounce racier than other night time soaps like Dallas or Dynasty. There was some nudity when terry hatcher got locked out of her house... but it wasnt a sexual thing, and there is nothing wrong with being naked in my opinion.

At the same time, I can empathize with parents frustrations that there just isnt any quality family programing on these days. When I was little we had the cosby show, who's the boss, family ties and many more. That type of programming just isnt around.

So instead of working to ban or tame what is on, why not create some initiatives for the networks to produce more paletable shows. If these groups would invest their time money and effort into lobying for new programing in the earlier evening hours it might have some impact.

I can remember being 11 or 12 and being mortified watching a night of "must see" tv with my parents... seinfeld was about masterbation and frasier was very sexually charged too. My family was open, but its just uncomfortable.

Good Grief, Charlie Brown! Sex and the City survived how many seasons without being banned? It was worse than Desperate Housewives as far as suggestive content. Sex and the City should have been kicked off tv land from the get go!!! Talk about immoral.

There is such a thing as turning off ones tv or making sure the kiddies are in bed when inappropriate viewing is on.

And when my kids were school age, I couldn't watch my soaps when they were home in the summer. And they weren't any where near what they are now.

Never liked soap operas. I thought they were "dumb."

Ah, but that's cable (both TBS where "Sex" is cleaned up a bit, and HBO, where it's not). With cable networks these groups can't influence advertising to the extent that they can protesting a show on one of the major networks. It's called "selective outrage". ;)

If ya don't like it change the channel. I happen to watch the show and don't find it very shocking, if at all.

Remember, Married With Children became even more popular when some lady went on a crusade to have it pulled.

Actually I enjoy the Crusaders. If you remember, Carry Nation got into a lot of bars. I think she had a few nips when she was breaking those bottles. :p

Desparate Housewives is one of the best shows ever to grace the air waves...
If you don't want your children to watch it.... then don't let them, pretty simple solution right there.

If you don't like it, don't watch it. I've actually never seen the show, and only vaguely heard of the title. I just don't like TV. My fiance did not even own one until we moved in together.

For the last fifteen years, the only shows I've watched religiously are prime time cartoons (I'm not joking). The Simpsons, King Of The Hill, Family Guy, and Futurama are the only sitcoms that have humor that I can relate to.

Just the title "Desperate Housewives" is enough to turn me off to this...whatever it is. Who wants to watch a bunch of spoiled middle class hausfraus whine and moan about...er, whatever it is that spoiled middle class hausfraus usually whine and moan about?

I will never complain about anything that no one is forcing me to watch. I agree with Bing Crosby's philosophy. When TV first became popular in the late 40s and early 50s, someone asked him his opinion of television entertainment, and if he felt it might be a little low brow for most people's tastes. His answer was "You'll Never Hear Me Complain About Anything That's Free."...Can't argue with that. ;)

Apparently a lot of people want to watch it and are watching it since it's become a huge success.

Actually, DH is not overly revealing compared to the soaps and other prime time series. Teri Hatcher lost her towel - she wasn't naked due to a sex scene. Also, we only saw her head & shoulders or from the knees down.

In a weird way, the show does tell a moral story and every character has suffered a consequence of misdeeds and it's not treated as a 'laugh'. At least in DH, none of the characters is portrayed as perfect. The show is supposed to by campy and spoof suberbia with a dash of mystery.

Besides, as everyone has pointed out, young kids should be in bed and parents should turn off the TV. Friends was on at 8PM and should have been on at a later hour.

I didn't have an early bed time that I can recall. I don't recall having to be in bed at 9PM, etc. I think that was because my parents were too busy with my father's hemodialysis treatments - as a result, my brother & I are night owls. I can't imagine going to bed before midnight unless I'm sick. I do have to try to go to bed by 1AM - for the past several months, I've been going to bed at 2AM or later and I need to leave the house by 8:20 to get to work on time.
