:) Here's how it works. The only numbers that can occur as the final answer are multiples of 9: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72 and 81.

To see this, the two-digit number ab really means 10a + b. (Example: 67 = 10*6 + 7.) The sum of the digits is a + b. So when you subtract you get

(10a + b) - (a + b) = 9a.

(Example: 67 - (6+7) = 54 = 9*6.)

All of these numbers (9, 18, 27, etc.) are marked with the same symbol. Therefore you will always get the same symbol no matter what number you started with.

When you hit "try again," the symbols are rearranged, but still all of the multiples of 9 are marked with the same (new) symbol.

All I can say is THANK GOD for MM!!!!! I would have been totally haunted all night trying to figure that out.

I remember a similar puzzle I tried before that had to do with cards, and it really had me puzzled.... couldn't figure out how the computer could POSSIBLY read my thoughts!
