Could any-one tell me what rinks have good ice-dance programs. I am looking at doing my final year (or at least the final semester) of my degree as an exchange student. I have a ticket to watch Canadian nationals and on my way home I am going to Montreal for a few days to check out the university there.. Can anyone suggets rinks that are good for dance in Montreal as I would like to check them out too. Our Uni has exchange programs with Concordia, Toronto Uni , Calgary ,SFU and a number of US uni's which I also hope to look at.(It is associated with all the state Californian Uni's.) On my way home I am also going to Newark, Calgary and Vancouver to check out the Unis but I do not know about the ice-dance programs or rinks near these unis..

The Wilmington (Delaware) Skate Club hosts Social Dances about once or twice a month. They are located in the same area as University of Delaware (which also has several rinks open all year).

Here is a link to the University of Delaware ice:

Here is a link to the Wilmington Social Dance site:

I have not been to the skate club's dances, but know people who have and they say it is really nice. I will start going when my husband catches up to me skill-wise (so he can be my partner).

Terry, Thank you for the information and Link. That is the rink that my coach has suggested . I am going to look at it but while the ice skating looks great I am worried that I may have trouble with the uni entrance. Delaware is not one of the associate uni's of the uni I go to although if I go there I can get credits for my course as long as I chose the right subjects. My problem is that I am doing a communications degree and the course at Delaware is extremely selective taking only the top 100 students that have already been studying there. I am a much better skater than 'studier' and an A + student I am not.(although I was one mark off an A+ in one of my subjects.) The dance nights look good though.

I don't know how far you want to go, but the Lloyd Center Ice Rink in Portland Oregon (link) has social dance sessions every Tuesday, Saturday, and two on Sunday mornings. Both Lloyd Center and Mt. View in Vancouver, WA (link) have good dance coaches.

Good schools in Portland are Portland State and University of Portland (Catholic). I'm not sure what there is in Vancouver, but I'm sure you can find out somehow. Neither rink is actually a college rink though.

Since you mention an exchange program with U of T, check out the University Skating Club

http://www.icomm.ca/usc/

This club skates out of U of T's Varsity Arena.
One of my good friends belonged to this club for years, and tested up to Diamond Dances.

Thanks again for information. The rink does not have to be on campus but I would like it somewhere close and it is important that it has good dance coaches. I have actually competed on a senior level at nationals in the past and I want to have a coach that can help me progress. The Uni I now attend is 15 minutes from an ice rink but I drive an hour and a half away because the best dance coaches are at another rink. I am hoping not to have to drive so far. I skate because I love it but I want to feel my skills are progressing as well as enjoying the social atmosphere.

Boston!

Don't forget the incredible ice dance program at the Skating Club of Boston.. Here you are within minutes of Boston University (which also just built it's own huge arena) Harvard, Boston College, Northeastern University, Tufts, Emerson, Brandeis,..... etc etc etc shall I go on? Morning dance ice runs from 5:00 am until 10:30 am m-f and there are public dance sessions on the weekends.

The Hickory Hill Figure Skating Club in NY has a strong ice dance program. They have a very devoted group of skaters, and a few elite teams. They skate at the Harvey School rink in Katonah, NY, which is nearish (1/2 hour or less?) the following colleges:

*State University of New York: Purchase (SUNY Purchase)
*Manhattanville (in Purchase)
Concordia (in Bronxville)
The College of Mt. St. Vincent (in Riverdale, the Bronx)
*Fordham University (in the Bronx)
Iona College (New Rochelle)
Marymount College/Fordham University (Tarrytown)
Pace University (I forget the town - Pleasantville?)
*Sarah Lawrence (Bronxville)

This rink has national-level dance coaches. http://www.hhfsc.org/. You can contact them for more info.

The club at Bear Mountain runs ice dance every weekend morning. I forget their name...Hessian Lake FSC? Their program is more recreational, I think, but it does have a strong dance emphasis. I think your skating there would just be for fun, not for real coaching. Nearby universities include:

*Vassar College (Poughkeepsie)
Marist College (I forget the town)

You can also drive from Vassar or Marist to Katonah, but I think the drive would be more like 50 minutes.

I've * the schools that have a rep as being more competitive, academically. Don't discount them, though. None, except perhaps Vassar back in its glory days, could be considered "elite" or "Ivy." Sarah Lawrence and Vassar would probably be the toughest two on the list to get into.

Boston is another good, strong choice for dance, with lots of universities to select from. If you're interested in communications, and need a somewhat-less-than-elite university, Emerson College might be a very good choice for you. They specialise in communications, but their admissions policies are somewhat forgiving.

Boston University has a very strong communications program, but their academic requirements are higher.
