    Abt with Asthma?

Someone posted in another thread, referring to Alexander Abt having asthma?? Is that true? I thought he'd dropped out of worlds due to injury....and I know that he's had tons of difficulties with injuries in the past, but never knew about this. Is it true? Regardless, poor guy...wish he could be at worlds...

    Kasey,

I was the one who mentioned Abt and asthma. I did not mean to make it sound like that was the reason for his withdrawing from Worlds. My comment was only a response to a message posted by Rgirl in another thread. I believe I have heard one of the commentators say that Abt has asthma in regards to his stamina on ice.

    Sorry about the confusion <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/embarassed.gif ALT=":o">

Thanks for clearing it up to me....that poor guy! Okay, so I'm going to have to root for Abt from now on...anyone with asthma who skates has to be considered an underdog! (Of course, he'll never top Alexei Y. in my heart!) My mom has had chronic asthma all her life, and I just really feel for anyone who has to deal with that. Kasey

    Kasey,

Sorry about your Mom. I do understand your feeling about asthma though. My Dad's had it since about the early 1950's and I've had it the last 7 years ever since I moved to PA from IL. Dr says there's some plants here that trigger my attacks as well as a couple other things.

My sympathies to you Lynn...yeah, we actually ended up moving because of my mom's asthma, to a drier climate...she is healthier here, but still gets attacks, and is prone to bronchitis/pneumonia. Take care of yourself, Kasey

    Re: Abt with Asthma?

If Abt really has Asthma - poor boy. And how very brave of him not to use his illness to take advantage of the "pitty factor". I've never heard Abt complaining about that so I've always thought that his lack of stamnia and heavy breathing at the and of his performances might be due to lack of endurance training, which obviously wouldn't be fair given such circumstances. Hm, I'm having a bad conscience now and probably I was not the only one assuming that Abt might be a bit lazy.
AFAIK Ben Ferreira and Tonya Harding have/have had asthma too, does anybody know to which extent that might effect/might have effected their skating?

I don't know about Ben Ferreira...I know that Tonya H had it, supposedly...but also smoked, so obviously wasn't overly concerned about it's affect on her performances!

Asthma isn't fun. Two weeks ago a was diagnosed with it as well. For (3) months I had tightness in my chest, shortness of breath upon activities, and consitant coughing. Being a nurse, I knew what it was, but was in denial about it. Now I'm under medical treatment and my asthma is becoming under control. I'm feeling better. I can understand how he may be feeling right now. I do wish him well.

I have asthma and CLD (chronic lung disease). It sucks. I'm with you, my fellow asthma sufferers! Poor Sasha, must be awful... but my asthma hasn't bothered me with skating yet, neither has CLD, so, I'm hoping it behaves.

My mom suffers slight asthma too and from her experiences with smokers all I can say regarding Harding: Asthma + smoking = one of the biggest stupidities I've ever heard.

I know what you all are going through. I am being treated for all of the above and what really gets me is that right now I can't make long range plans because I don't know when I'll get sick again. When I am feeling OK, I relish that day so much.

I feel for Sasha because he is such a good skater and appears to love competing and it seems right at the 4 minute mark he dies right there on the ice. I wonder if oxygen right before he skates would help?

Ben Ferreira does have asthma, but Abt doesn't. I think what the commentator must have meant was his problems to get enough oxygen while his sinuses were stuffed with the cyst he had removed in surgery. I had a similar thing and it makes you get less oxygen than if your sinuses are free. But he definitely doesn't have asthma.

smoking = one of the stupidest things I've ever heard

smoking + asthma = vintage Tonya Harding. That girl is her own worst enemy.

    Nadya,

Thank You for the info! I wish I could remember which competition the remark about Abt was made but since the commentator was wrong, no need for me to go through all my tapes .
