ABC and the War!

Anyone have any news if a war starts that ABC will be entitled to pre-empt their regularly schecluded programs?

1) Not everyone considers it a "dumb war". Political threads go in the off-topic forum.

2) If the situation warrants, ABC will cut into programming, regardless of what's being aired.

3) Chances are good Worlds will be re-run on ESPN or ESPN2, so if ABC does cut in, everyone will be able to catch up there in the future.

I don't suppose you are able to get CTV or TSN? I know Canadian broadcasters would not cut in with broadcasts about the war during the Worlds. At least, they better not!

TSN will show the worlds no matter what. As for CTV, their coverage sucks this year and they probably break away to go to war news. A bit off topic, but last week during Bush's press conference, CTV switched to it as did 14 other channels that I get...and I only get about 40...so I does worry me that skating time might be affected.

Saying that everyone would just be able to see a rerun of Worlds if it aired on ESPN or ESPN 2, is assuming everyone has cable TV which is not the case at all. I don't have cable at all and I have several friends who don't either, so I kinda take exception to the remark that 'everyone will just be able to see it anyway' because that is not the case.

But, that said, I think if something extremely significant happens with the war, ABC will interrupt their programming (as they should if it is something significant, that would be big news). But if there is nothing new to report, they do not need to interrupt anything IMO. A crawl would be fine to keep us up to date if there is nothing really new to report. They have gotten better about using those crawls for smaller stories so I would hope they exercise their brains when deciding whether or not to interrupt Worlds for anything. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":\"> Its a hard thing to decide. You have folks who really care about this issue and those who do not really care at all, yet a mixture of these people are who are going to be watching Worlds. I guess we will see soon.

CTV's coverage is always good. I can't see that happening. I am confident the Worlds will be shown as always on CTV. I don't get TSN so have to rely on CTV.

Kara Bear, you've got that right!!!! And, to think that CTV *used* to be known as "Canada's Figure Skating Channel!"

Ladskater, I <strong><em>really</em></strong> hope you're right and CTV <strong>DOES</strong> stick with its Worlds schedule.

As for ABC ..... if the war is happening, I'm not counting on <strong><em>any</em></strong> Worlds coverage from them at all.

Coverage

It was coverage of the space shuttle disaster that preempted the television coverage of Europeans.

Covering world events and disasters on stations who are ill prepared to handle these things is quite annoying. The feed on the space shuttle disaster was the same five sentences, over and over again, for an extended period of time.

I'd like to see each station specialize in what they are good at. And I'd also like to see more stations become available to more people, not just lucky cable subscribers.

If anything interrupts the coverage of Worlds I will declare war on ABC! Let us watch what we tuned in to watch - if they must, they can post breaking news on a news ticker at the bottom of the screen and those who wish to find out more can tune to CNN or wait for local news.

I don't care if they repeat it on ESPN, I don't like ESPN's coverage. The color and film quality is shoddy and the constant sports updates are incredibly intrusive.

If there is war, it will certainly interrupt the coverage of Worlds. Heck, in the Pittsburgh area, they would interrupt the coverage of Worlds to broadcast a repeat of a high school basketball game.

There are more than 250,000 US military personnel in the area. If you figure on each one having an average of 20 family members, friends, etc., that comes to 5 MILLION people who will be extremely ticked off if something significant happens and ABC *doesn't* interrupt Worlds to inform them!

Perspective, people! If it was YOUR family member....

I just have to put my 2 cents in.....

The majority of my programming is American, and it has always frustrated me that the smallest incident warrants ABC interrupting regular programming. Given their track record for program interruption, I think we can be pretty assured Worlds would be interrupted.

Although I agree that an impending war is huge news, and certainly worthy of air time, I wish the networks would also realize some people need to occasionally escape the awful goings on in the world. I don't mean that the war should be ignored, but there are stations like msnbc and cnn that broadcast 24/7. Viewers should not have news forced down their throat at every turn.

I used to watch General Hospital and ABC would interrupt that constantly for any little piece of "breaking news" and to make things even more annoying, after the report Peter Jennings would "explain" the entire thing again as if we were too stupid to understand the reporter who was reporting from the site of the "breaking news"

Yes, news of war is important, but if there is breaking news, they should report it at the bottom of the screen .. for those who want to tune out they can turn to a news channel or wait for the skating to be over and then ABC can show the news. Some people want to watch the skating, that's what they tuned in for and that's what they should get. If ABC decides to "interrupt" programs they should re-air them in their entirety (which they do not do). If they promised to re-air everything in its entirety I wouldnt mind as much.

I wouldnt worry too much about the Ladies LP since it is a saturday night going into sunday morning overseas. The "breaking news" doesnt happen often on the weekends, IMO. There's another story with the men's since it is on thursday night. I dont think pairs or dance is on live at all, if im not mistaken so its possible they will interrupt as well.

The problem is not "breaking news". The problem is that in the first few days of the war they might go to 24/7 war coverage. That is what is annoying. I don't mind having my program interrupted for real news, but I would resent it if we had the same news repeated ad nauseum instead of normal programing.

The problem with "breaking news" is that it is not always that "breaking". They will just sit there on the air with a "We've just heard. . . . . " afraid if they don't another network is going to air something before they do.

just a question of which channel depending

When Bush made his speech on Monday, only ABC of the network TV companies actually stopped all their regular programing for the evening. So I don't think it's good. (I mean, I totally did not mind them interrupting the program to broadcast the speech, but thought doing it for the whole evening was way overdoing it.)
