Ahhh, Sarah Sarah Sarah

How good it is to see her skate so well! I remember when the posters in the forum were given her nothing but 'underrotated jumps; gawky looks, bent spirals, etc.' Even the Canadian fans wanted to adopt her. At the time I was not even a fan but I had to come to her defense. I saw the possibilities. I'm happy she's proven herself to others. She's a contender for 2006. Agree?

Re: Aaaah!! Sarah's Special!

Joe,
I assume you're referring to Sarah's "Life in Balance" special that was on tonight. I thought her skating was lovely, but the special was taped months ago, prior to her injury. If Sarah can get her skating up to that level, then of course she will be knocking on Michelle's door for the gold at Nationals. But if Sarah is skating like she did at Sears and Hallmark, I think she could have a tough time. Of course I understand that she was coming off a tough injury and I didn't expect her to be in top form. I just don't know if the four weeks between Sears and Hallmark and Nationals is enough time for her to get back into top competitive form.

The rest of this is not to Joe but just general musings: As for everything aside from actual real skating--"A Life in Balance" was one of the worst Olympic champion figure skating specials I've ever seen. As I said on the "Lead Pipe Award" thread: "Sarah has been a very cool Olympic champion but this special has singlehandedly destroyed at least half the coolness she worked so hard to generate. Her legs looked great though:smokin: "

I've been watching "South Park" all night just to get "A Life in Balance" out of my mind:p

It's half over... well, it's not THAT bad! It's what I expected.

About the programs I've seen so far: "Dancing in the Street"?? More like "Hooking in the Street" especially with her starting by standing on a podium under a street lamp! What were they thinking? :rollin:

The Scarf thing... MORE TOILET PAPER??? And then it turned pink... okay, not going there.

I did not like this at all, the majority of her costumes were very :x and . I only watched the acrobatics because I couldn't take anymore cheese and corn. I was watching Anastasia :p and flipped back and forth now and then so I couldn't say that I regretted wasting an hour of my precious life.

Well, I wouldn't even try choosing contenders for 2006. Who knows where the next Olympic champ will come from. As for Sarah, sure, just like dozens of other people have already said, she can continue to be good and someday great, she just has to get over this injury and back into the stride that carried her atop the podium in SLC. I missed the special, was it really that bad? Or was it just the usual cheese-fest? The only thing I really enjoy watching is the amateur competitions, I can do without the frilly shows. Although, COI was nice, just because I got to see my favorite skaters live! Wow, that was all the way back in 95. Chen Lu was World Champion, Surya was still on the scene, and Michelle was a jumping bean!

Re: Ahhh, Sarah Sarah Sarah

Well, here's what I learned from the special:
1. The kid from that show "American Dreams" (which I don't watch) has a very annoying voice.
2. If Sarah had three brothers and two sisters instead of the other way round, the Hugheses could easily be mistaken for the Brady Bunch, complete with a laughtrack that goes off at arbitrary moments, no matter whether or not what's happening on the screen is actually funny. They don't have to name that dog. I've decided that it's name is "Tiger." I swear, I was expecting to see the faces of the entire family in a blue Tic Tac Toe board at the end of that segment!
3. I'm glad that those guys on the trapeze and the hoola-hoop lady were able to once again find some employment for the holidays (everybody remember them from those Hamilton/Gordeeva Raggedy Snowman specials?)
4. Unlike her sister, Emily Hughes skates counter-clockwise
5. As a vaudvillian comedy team, Wagner and Hughes are great iceskaters.
You know what this special lacked, that would've made it a little more interesting? Some colleagues! When Lipinski did her special, she had Browning, Galindo and Punsalon & Swallow as guests, which enabled her to not just perform solo, but do a couple of pairs routines as a change of pace. While I certainly enjoy watching Sarah skate, it would've also been interesting to see her do some ensemble work to add a little variety.
Oh well, I suppose if Sasha Cohen or Irina Slutskaya had won the gold, it probably wouldn't have been any better or worse.

Re: Ahhh, Sarah Sarah Sarah

Idle and everybody in general,

Do you think if a non-American won the gold medal, they would give her a TV special on NBC primetime on Christmas day, or at least Telemundo at 3 after midnight?

Somehow, I don't see it happening. Even though the ladies LP at the Olympics is the highest rated event of the competitions, I doubt they'd give Irina her own special in America if she had won (which she very nearly did). The reason it won't happen is because the media never hypes non-American skaters much, because they assume people won't be interested in a foreign skater, and they're probably right. The network needs the hype to have a successful special.

But then, there's the exception: Sale and Pelletier. Thanks to the scandal and the media attention that followed, their Canadian homecoming special was broadcasted on American television, albeit in a truncated version.

It's a shame, really. I think Irina has more comic instincts than Sarah. I think a comedy variety skating special with Irina would've been much better. Just think of the potential vodka jokes!

Oh, I think the "Irina, a tragically unlucky life" special on Telemundo is a great idea! In between skating, Irina could lecture on skating artestry so that ignorant NA audiences could start to understand what skating is about and clap more for her when she tours here. As guests, she could have Mishin come on and try to teach us all how to read and perhaps B&S could do a BS segment to explain to us how Russian skaters have to earn gold medals by skating well, whle NA skaters just have to complain loud enough to get some. ;)

Re: Ahhh, Sarah Sarah Sarah

I did not watch the entire Sarah show because I found it dull and couldn't stay with it. Generally I don't like specials much. The competitions do it for me because they are filled with suspense. But I will say, as Joe stated at the outset of this thread, that Sarah did skate securely for the most part, and looked very mature and lovely. Not at all gawky. The director of the show also selected good angles.

Re: Ahhh, Sarah Sarah Sarah

While I liked the show and I liked Sarah, I am still not a fan of the champ at this time. As I've said from day one, she is a work in progress. I think at 20, she will be among the top five female skaters in the world.

I am a fan, I love Sarah. I miss her like crazy this season, so it is nice to see her. It was a nice surprise to see how DianeO (the admin of the SH forum, and the webmaster of Michelle Kwan Guardian Angel) looks like.

Russian Skaters :-(

I read a translated interview a few months ago where Elena Berezhnaya dissed the Olympic Village (hey, you're a guest! Good guests keep their mouths shut if they don't have anything nice to say), dissed American food and complained about her training conditions in the US.

She also opened a cafe in Russia(how much of the venture capital came from those dollars she got from US COI?). Why didn't she build a state of the art ice rink in her home town? That way the US ice that is being taken up by her and her partner can be used by a more deserving and probably struggling American skater.

The remarks by the Russians make you want to scream, "Ivan go home!"
