Once again, I'm not noting placements as the results are on the event website

There was a major tech difficulty with Amanda Billing's marks and we waited easily 10 minutes for them to get things sorted out. Luckily she was the last skater in her flight, so hopefully the delay didn't hurt the ones after her too much.

Thanks Rosaleen!

I bet your rear end must be REALLY sore by now!! Again, many thanks for your time reporting this. Even if you don't have time until after the whole thing is over, I'd be interested in your general observations about the quality of Group A compared to Group B and how the scoring ended up. I know this is asking a lot, and trust me, I'm not begging, just curious. :)

There are a lot of officials involved in the competition:

The two groups have l0 judges and each group is different. The two groups have 4 officials and each group is different. A total for the entire score for the Ladies would be 20 judges and 8 officials.

1. What will be the total number of judges scoring the SP competition?

2. Of those how many will actually be used in the SP competition?

3. Will the 4 officials used for the SP, not be used for the LP?

4. Will the number of judges who were not used for the SP be included with the number used for the LP?

5. Anything else I should be aware of in the administration of the competition?

On the USFS board, they said that Mao's 3A was downgraded to a 2A for underrotation.

Yes, although all of us (about 10 people sitting around me and in other parts of the arena) thought it was perfectly clean, the tech specialist downgraded it to a 2a

Did her 59 points in the tech scores reflect the downgrading?

As the stakes get higher, it looks like there is going to be more "wuz robbed-ing" than ever before.

Is there an any appeal process that a skater can initiate if it is felt that the tech specialist has blown a call?

Thanks for taking the time Rosaleen, to post these wonderful reports! We really appreciate it! :)

And Mathman ... I was wondering the same thing about the tech specialist. It seems to be giving quite a bit of power to one person. And what if that person is wrong, or God forbid ... has an agenda of their own? Of course, we know that is very unlikely. ;)

I believe the ISU just issued a decree that such calls are "field of play" decisions, and cannot be challenged.

I almost can smell the 'scandal' in controversy judging at 2006 Olympics.

Thanks so much Rosaleen!

As for the Asada's 3axel, I have never seen a fully rotated one from her yet. Usually it's just 1/6 or less but I can imagine that she could have cheated it more. We should reserve any comment until we see the jump on replay (which is never ;) ).
A caller would have never downgraded the jump without checking it again to make sure.

It can't be easy to judge the difference between 1/6 of a rotation and 1/4 of a rotation (30 degrees), even on instant replay and even if for an expert. Its a big responsibility. But referees have to make close calls like that in every sport, so I guess that's life.

Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy Olys.

Field plays are non contestable!! And who will be the Technical Assisants at the Olys? Say goodbye to Figure Skating after the Olys. It's time has come. Cheating is part of the culture, and the media will play it up. The Americans won't watch it on TV,. ABC will stop sponsoring it. Well, you know the rest.
