Re: Butyrskaya in black and white

Thanks for posting the photo of that very strange Urmanov costume. Yup, that's the one!

Hmmm, how can I describe Bute's. Well, it looks like a modified ballerina dress. The bottom has some netting underneath the fabric, like a tou-tou (sp?). It has long sleeves. I've looked and looked on the net for a photo, but just can't find one. Thanks for your efforts!

I realy liked Maria's 96 costume too, allthough I felt almost guilty about liking it, it was just so odd I guess. The top part wasn't all that nice, but there was something about the way the creoline under the skirt moved and the fact that it was something different that none of the other ladies were wearing.

As the resident Plushenko fan here (which means I like the more, shall we say, unusual costumes), allow me to say that I also like this costume. I think it's sort of off the wall, but in a cute way.

Cheers,

Laura :)

I truly truly loved Michelle Kwan's Olympic costumes this year.

I think her Purple Rach one was the best skating dress I have ever seen.

Her Red Scheherazade one was also gorgeous. I think the cleavage and the gap between was to show the judges and the audience that the new Olympic Champion should be a woman with Breast....too bad the past 3 Olympic Champs didn't have any at the time they won...

Re: Hmmm...

About Tara....

Since she wants to be an actress so bad, I assumed she bought some.

On second thought, that might have something to do with the fact that the slightly darker hue of purple in the crotch area makes it look like she's wearing a silk codpiece.

Re: costumes

I agree that plushenko is in a category all his own. I am always intrigued and interested in seeing what he and mishin will come up with next for him to where. I, too hope that he doesn't stop wearing his over the top outfits because it won't be the same if he doesn't where them. also, I think that Maria B. 96 dress is not all that bad. it's pretty simple and sometimes IMO simplicity is better than the reallly decorated dresses.

Re: Urmanov's rag costume/Darth Vader

RG,
I don't know what he was thinking...
Maybe he was depressed and decide to put his head in a sack, like the peanuts characters??
(But it didn't stay stuck in the sack because of the speed?)

Idle, Oksana looks somewhat like Johnny Carson in his fortune teller outfit - or the guy in drag in La Cage au Folles

Re: Oksana

Hey Idle...the Barbara Eden/Oksana costume reminded me that some of the early ice shows had extravagant garb...like a Las Vegas show.

If anyone can find some to post from old show stills, old magazines, etc., I'd love to see them. Somehow I'm recalling a still photo with Sonja Henie sprouting a big spray of showgirl feathers out of her head. Am I imagining it? Also, didn't some shows have numbers that included women in huge ball gowns? How did they EVER move on ice? How did Dick Button skate in a dinner jacket and dress pants?

Also, even though some costumery today seems a little "much", I've still never been a particular fan of--for instance---Peggy's lime green thing, or the drab, descriptionless Dorothy dress---or Scott Hamilton's unitard---

Re: Oksana

Katz on the cover of the book "Figure Skating To Fancy Skating Memoirs of the Life Of Sonja Henie" she is shown skating with red features on her head. And a lot of the pictures inside show her with some fancy headwear.

I think the women with the big dresses moved on the ice by doing a type of sculling, moving the feet in and out in and out. That way their upper bodies could remain still.
