"Nude" Topic

I am just wondering what is becoming of figure skating. There seems to be a lot of "nude" photos of figure skaters circulating here. Are skaters that hard up for money? I want to see skaters "bare their souls" on the ice not their bodies.

Just call me a prude.

I think it's partly a sociological thing Ladskater.

Essentially, North America is a puritanical based society - even with our image of work hard and play hard and being reckless. (sorry - I'm not sure if this image is applied only to America) Europeans would view these nude pics as art.

So far, the links I've looked at have been very tasteful.

Parting the Iron Curtain

The Ruskies are opening up to western decadence by almost showing their privates in various seductive poses. It's yet another sign communism is dead. Since Canada is very much a socialist state, which is 1 little red book shy of communism, and you're Canadian, I can see why you're so distressed about this spit in the face of Lenin.

Sorry, Lad, it was just such an easy set-up.

Actually, I agree with Heyang that nudity is a sociological and cultural thing. Personally, not only do the photos not bother me, but I also enjoy them. To me, a healthy beautiful body is one of the most beautiful things on earth. The typical Playboy or Penthouse style is not for me--too much silicon and plastic, boring--but nude photos done by gifted art photographers of gorgeous athletes are something I find lovely, sensual, and natural. Actually I find the pseudo tease photos skaters sometimes do, ie with the hands over the breasts even when they're wearing a top or trying hot come-hither looks (male or female), to be the annoying ones. JMO.

I am not a prude, and I can definitely appreciate the beauty of many of those nude pics. However, I do think that the number of such pictures coming out of Russia shows that society being seriously messed up. After all, you don't see French or Italian skaters posing for such pictures. So, while I see nothing wrong with those pictures per se, I do question the motives that make those skaters pose for them.

That prude thing... yeah, that's me. ;)

Seriously though, some things should be private, and I think that a married couple on the verge of doing the wild thing should be just that: private! I mean, Averbukh is practically doing his wife in those photos!

Quote:
There seems to be a lot of "nude" photos of figure skaters circulating here.
Most of the photos that have been posted here are quite old, the question would be why people suddenly decided to post them now (they probably found them now).

Quote:
Europeans would view these nude pics as art.
And they do (can't speak for all of them, of course).

Btw from what I've seen most people enjoyed them (agreed that they're rather tasteful), so why the need to question the motives? "S/he is beautiful and I enjoyed seeing her/him naked, but I bet s/he must have had some shady reasons for baring it all, like being money hungry or having issues, or whatever"?

Why do people pose naked? Because of a variety of reasons. For me the naked body is art, so I don't feel the need to question it being photographed (I'm guilty of doing it myself, photographing it, that is). It's just a form of celebrating the human form. And I bet that most of those skaters felt the same when they did it. If you want money you pose for Playboy, etc., where you have completely different photos. Btw I think that some skating costumes show more that we could see in the photos posted here. ;)

Fetal:

You have been listening to or watching too much anti-Canadian propaganda via my arch enemy Buchanan. Canada is a Democratic society and based on English law. In fact, Her Majesty, the Queen of England is our Sovereign. In her words: "We are not amused.."

Re: "Nude" Topic

Well said, WindSpirit. And while we're talking about why somebody would be involved in nude photographs, I have been too--both taking them and being taken--my photo that is. What were my motivations? Because I have photographer friends and I was there. In a number of homes of strangers across the country, all or parts of my body may be hanging naked:cool: Also, you know how I asked Fetal to do a wallpaper of Ilia Kulik because I wanted to see Fetal's interpretation? That's what I wanted to see from these photographers, how they would interpret my body. In college as a dance major I posed nude for life drawing classes. The motivation was money and believe me, it is hard work. People joke about it but try putting yourself in an off-center position and not moving for 15 minutes, or even five. It was harder than waitressing, which I also did. BTW, I got hit on as a waitress a lot more than I ever did sitting naked in front of 50 people three times a week:smokin:

However, I also understand that it's not for everyone. If people don't like such photos, they shouldn't look at them.

And why did I take nude photos? Not to sound to esoteric, but to let the camera show you the body in a way you'd never seen before. To explore the mystery of the object, all the deconstructionist aesthetic stuff--plus it's fun:cool:

Re: "Nude" Topic

Are we forgetting the one big reason for nude photography? Arousal! That's right! Some people like to be aroused, and some people like to arouse. If this very discreet transaction of sexuality offends you (after all, it is light years from actual intercourse), find a nice patch of sand and bury your head in it, or is that too sexual, too:evil: ?

"She"

There is a huge, huge difference between the snapshot of a young bride on her wedding night and the photos taken by professionals for publication. I find the matter of selling photos that were taken for private use not just a breach of trust, but generally despicable.

Have you ever seen American Rolling Stone, Blender, Maxim, Playboy, FHM, Sports Illustrated...? Does that mean American society is "seriously messed up" too? I don't see why it's any different for a model, actress, or singer to pose nude than a skater. The athletes work hard to train their bodies, so I say flaunt it. I recall some people being offended by Kwan showing off a bare midriff; I don't get it, because in skating these girls are showing us their underwear constantly! They are used to wearing skintight leotards and doing spirals and lifts where people see their crotches, so I'm sure most are not self-conscious at all.

BTW, I have seen photos like this of French and Italian skaters. France and Italy are both extremely sexually liberated European countries, so it's no real shock there.
