Skippy Baxter is(was) a Canadian

If you look for the latest Newsletter by Paula there is a click for 2003 Hall of Fame Inductees into the USFSA Hall of Farm.

The name Skippy Baxter was at one time synonymous with Sonya Henie. I heard many wonderful reports on his figure skating at the old Center Theatre in Rockefeller Center.

Apparently he was the first skater to execute a triple salchow (and he did it during his show routine!) way back in the late 40s. He also was the first skater to do the sommersalt flip on ice in his show routine.

According to the article he was born in Canada and he is still with us. Who knew? I think he could write a book or two on figure skating way back then.

Anyone have any other news on him?

Skippy Baxter was born in 1931 in Canada but raised in the U.S.. He took two U.S. medals in 1940, the men's bronze and the Pairs Silver with partner Heddy Stenuf. He was a free-skater with a lot of pizzazz where he skated with the newly created Ice Capades throughout the 1940's.
