Oops, I meant "Kasey" on my previous post. (Edited now.)

Doggygirl, that's such an interesting observation about the Miss America contest. (Did you know I was in the Miss America pageant in 1963? This is true.)

I think that Title Nine (the law that says schools have to give equal opportunities to women's and girl's sports programs), combined with the feminism of the 1970s, has done its work. If you look at women's sports, there is no "powder puff" football any more. Women's tennis, basketball, volleyball, etc., play almost by the same rules as men, and with just as much muscle and vigor.

The sport of cheerleading, for instance, has progressed from eye candy to serious team gymnastics over the last 40 years.

Maybe we are seeing the same thing happening in figure skating. The days are numbered when its major appeal to (male) fans is a micro skirt that flips up with every turn.

But the downside is that now figure skating has to compete with other serious sports for its fan base. Look how thrilling the Master's golf tournament was yesterday, with Tiger's ball hanging on the lip of the cup through two or three verses of the Hallelujah Chorus, before dropping in for a birdie. That's what figure skating has to be able to match.

Well, first off - WE DEMAND PICTURES!!!!!!

Mean time, the changing nature of "traditional" roles in sports and in other facets of life is an interesting one. I think I'll start a new thread for that. Your post got me thinking about some interesting examples.

Now how many of you are going to Atlantic City for the annual pageant and then staying for Skate Amercia? You could win a tiara at the pagaent; a gold medal at SA, maybe in a bundle at Trump's Taj Mahal. tempting?

Well, I pretty much agree with what Mathman said about the tv airing this year....it isn't the same to watch it when you know all the results. I promised myself I wouldn't get spoiled...but I work on my computer all the time, it is just TOOOOOOO tempting to check things out (although I've already begun to promise myself that I WILL NOT BE SPOILED FOR THE OLYMPICS, no phone, no computers, no newspapers...let's see if I can hold out). And I could go on and on about how the coverage treats competition more like a show than a competition...all those fluff pieces not enough skating...BUT, having said that, I would miss it terribly if none or even less were shown.

Neither has Miss Washington. Last year's Miss Washington was Allison Porter, cum laude graduate from Harvard in astrophysics, fluent in Spanish, a bantum weight intercollegiate boxing champion, soocer player, violinist and pianist. To be in the pageant she took a leave of absence from her position at the Hutchingson Cancer Research Center, and she entered the University of Washington Medical School last winter.

BTW, I read recently that in order to make the pageant more attractive to the networks they are thinking of having it over several days, with viewers calling in to vote contestants off, like American Idol.

well that's not fair! Alaska's entire population is smaller than the pop of Seattle! They'd have to limit votes!

Kasey, if you like to watch bobsleding Speed Channel was showing it this past winter on Saturday or Sunday afternoon.
As for ESPN showing Curling no it wasn't live.
As for Terry, I like him as someone else said he doesn't talk bad about the skaters and when he's not sure about a move he'll ask Peter or whom ever he's working with about it.
I am won't be going to Atlantic City, when I think of AC I think of Casinos and i work at one so I'll pass Skate America this year. Besides I am wanting to take in part of Nationals, Saint Louis is not that far from me. But I will watch it on TV ( that is if it's shown)
