The Japanese Federation has announced that Mao Asada will skate in the Senior GP this coming fall, even though she is not eligible for Senior ISU championship events. She is #20 on the ISU Ranking list, which will guarantee her at least one assignment.

The ISU ranking list has been revised recently, and it is an eye opener:
1. Arakawa
2. Ando
3. Suguri
4. Slutskaya
5. Onda
6. Sebestyen
7. Cohen
8. Kostner
9. Poykio
10. Rochette
11. Liashenko
12. Meissner
13. Corwin
14. Sokolova
15. Phaneuf
16. Kwan
17. Maniachenko
18. Sawada
19. Dytrt
20. (Mao) Asada

Amazing. Four of the top 5 are Japanese even though none of them made the World podium, and Onda didn't even make it to Worlds.

The ISU Rankings heavily favor those who do the GP.
Um, I can't say I have much of an opinion here but, that's the impression that I get.

But, wow! I really hope they show her on TV in the fall.

I hope at least one country will invite her, and assuming Japan will give her one spot in NHK that means she will have 2 events and if she skates well WOW  how about GPF

Can't WAIT to see Asada...

Especially on TV. Thus far I've only seen her LP over the internet on video. She will definitely bring something interesting to the Sr. GP.

On the ISU rankings. I'm surprised now that we have a full season under COP that they don't rank by high score, or average score or something along those lines from ISU events. It seems to me that would be a truer way to "rank" the skaters than whatever they are doing now.

The ISU rankings value GP events more than any other competition, even Worlds and Olympics.

If you win two GP events, you get 400 points for each event, for a total of 800---which gets you into the GPF. If you win the GPF, you get 800 points. You count the two highest GP points for the season, which would be 800+400=1200. That is the same points you would get for winning Worlds.

The reason why Sasha dropped from 1st at the start of last season to 7th this coming season is simply that she didn't skate in the GP. That's why Michelle Kwan is #16.

If she lives up to the forum hype I've been reading I believe she will shake up the ladies singles even if she skates only 1 GP.

Of course they'll show her on TV in the fall; she's consistently landing the 3axel, and if that doesn't scream "TV worthy" or "ratings draw", I don't know what does
