Brian Joubert Announces New Coach

It's official - Brian has announced his split with coach Vernonique Guyon and that he already has a new coach to train with. If you recall, she was his life-long coach until they split a couple of years ago and he went with Laurent. Brian and Vero got back together in January, and now they are going separate ways.

Brian has arranged for a Russian coach to come and train with him in Potiers - contrary to rumors it will not be Yagudin, Tarasova, or Morozov and he will probably make an announcement by early next week.

I had the chance to visit with Brian last week in Paris and am very happy to report that he is quite lean, in great shape, eager for the new season, and that this coaching split has been anticipated for some time. Many will say that this puts him in a bad position going into the Olympic season, but better to get stabilized with a new coach now - early in the summer - than later.

Personally, I think Brian needs a good choreographer moreso than a coach. He has all the elements. He just doesn't sell them. Plushy sells his dare-do style; Stephane sells his charming lyricism; Klimkin sells his uber artistic style. Those are his top European competitors.

I'd also like brian to work on an exhibition piece from something light like a latin american number to loosen him up.

Interesting that according to the French article (if my French doen't fail me), they split over money issues.

Also according to the second article Brian will work with Lucinda Ruh in July to perfect his spins - that may be a welcome change as well, since that's where he is clearly weaker than Lambiel.

I am certainly eager to see who that Russian coach is. The most famous man singles coaches won't leave Russian for Brian (Mishin, Kurdyavtsev), and I'll be surprised if he takes any chances with an unknown. Well, we'll see.

I agree on Lucinda Ruh - she's magnificent and could be both instructional AND inspirational to Brian.

There's more than money issues, there was also a significant time problem: Veronique has young female skater that she wants to devote a lot of time to - Brian needs concentrated attention for this critical season.

I agree with everything else, but I don´t think that a new choreographer would make any difference (considering that he had Tarasova who is a genius to get skaters well choreographed to suit their style, and it did not work with him, in my opinion) or a different type of music to make him loosen up.

Is the name really Ruh that will help him with spins? I got the impression from some messages on FSU that it was not her.

Generally I believe that a coaching change is never a good idea with the Olympics so close as they now are. Of course if there was no other choice...

He never said anything about Lucinda to me, but I'm so crazy about her that I would gladly fly back over just to watch HER spin!

Other than the spins, there is nothing I can see that he needs for the technical. He needs a good interesting program to make use of his abundant technical prowess. His quads are awesome. If TT did that number about the Columus ships then he needs someone else who can turn that face into a smile, and easy on the costume, but then my tastes in costumes are the simpler, the better.

I think Joubert needs to work on his flexibility and presentation skills, as he has a somewhat stiff upper carriage and he often comes across as "wooden" during his programs. It's not enough to have a choreographer create a masterpiece; the skater also has to "sell" the program to the audiences and judges. What matters most is that the skater (with the help of the choreographer) is able to find the "emotional core" of the music, relate to it and thus interpret it well. Joubert does better with masculine, athletic-driven programs which emphasize his strength and technical abilities. He does not have the elegant, lyrical style of Johnny Weir and Emmanuel Sandhu, the sensitive, nuanced interpretation of Jeffrey Buttle or the idiosyncratic, frenzied showiness of Evgeni Plushenko. For Joubert to really stand out in terms of presentation and choreography, he needs to find his own "style" and skate to music that he feels passionately about. Hopefully his new coach and choreographer will be able to guide him in the right direction.

From the article:
Autre nouveauté annoncée: le Français travaillera avec la Suissesse Lusinda Routh, "meilleure spécialiste de la pirouette", durant une partie du mois de juillet.
If my French is correct, this means: In other news, the Frenchman will work with Swiss Lucinda Ruh, "best spin specialist" during a part of July.

There was a woman who worked with him in the past, Lusinda Ruth I think. I'm not sure who exactly they are referring to.
The articles state that Guyon is the one who broke the contract, although there is no statement from her. Madame Joubert says that in addition to the time issue that Zanzibar referred to above, Guyon also wanted a percentage of Brian's winnings this season which is against federation regulations and she wanted exclusive access to Brian, meaning that he could not bring in any other consultants without her (Guyon's) express permission. Madame J also says that Brian is fine with this because he "smelt it in the wind" LOL or sensed it was coming.

I agree he needs to develop his own style and refine it. Not copy anyone elses.

I feel that Brian needs to work on the edges and learn to skate and balance on one foot. It seems he mostly use two feet move around the ice. He also needs to have his own style, not use too much Yagudin's leftover.

Apparently, his new coach named Andrei Berezintsev. Never heard of him before. He's from Perm, and he coaches Fleur Maxwell.
