favorite skating costumes
The dark blue dress Nicole Bobek wore for her Dr. Zhivago program is a favorite of mine. Actually, the white peasant-style dress she wore for the SP that year was a winner as well.
I thought the shimmery, champagne colored Vera Wang Nancy Kerrigan wore for the LP at the 1994 Olys was a knockout. Speaking of '94, I loved the costume Josse Chouinard wore for her Gershwin program. I loved the way the skirt on that outfit moved. It wasn't wispy like so many of the skirts are; it had a little more substance or weight. When it twirled up it stood out from her body and formed a little undulating circle.
Lu Chen went through a stage in the mid 1990s when she wore costumes with simple leotard-style bodices. They looked almost like a ballet dancers practice outfit. I always liked those dresses on Lulu; they were a refreshing contrast to the sparkly look.
I've noticed that some of the men go for a pedestrian style, like "I've just come in off the street in my
t-shirt and jeans and decided to skate." I'm fond of this look myself, although I realize it may be a way of shouting to the world, "I'm not a gay sissy-boy in a frilly outfit". Remember how Urmanov was pilloried for his 'Sir Walter Raleigh goes to the bath house' costume?
Still, if a skater has a good build, those simple,
form hugging t-shirts and pants make him look like Stanley Kowalski -- if he'd just get a couple of tatoos and roll up a pack of Marlboros in his shirt sleeve.
Sorry for the long post. I have to go soak my fingers in ice water now.
