So I just got a glimpse of one of the new summer interns at the newspaper. He is working on the news desk right now, but will switch to features half way through the summer..... I dont work in the editorial side of the paper, so I am rarely even in the newsroom. Would it be strange of me to email him? We went to the same college, but he got his masters in journalism while i was getting my undergrad in education. Hmmm. What are your thoughts?

Why not? If you know him, you can certainly e-mail him; you can even suggest grabbing lunch together.

I'm with Ptichka -- why not? At the very least, you have an alma mater and a job in common.

Oh well....that answers the question "why not" Still could become a friend. Who knows, maybe his wife will want to be your friend or maybe fix you up with another guy. Whatever.
