Who else is into Star Trek?

I was just wondering how many other Trekkies there are on this board? I never used to watch Star Trek, but have recently gotten into watching all the reruns, and am really enjoying them! My favourite series are TNG and Voyager.

I really don't care for DS9, from the little I've seen of it. The original series is really dated, but amusing for just that reason - it's so 60s-ish.

Any more thoughts, opinions, likes or dislikes?

My favorite by far is TNG. In part I think it's because Patrick Stewart is such a brilliant actor that he can really make even the more silly things meaningful. Though I think the last season that was done after Roddenberry's death was far inferior to all others. I just don't think that Bergman has the same grand vision; he invents interesting details, but without vision it becomes just another "adventure".

I don't really care for Voyager. I don't like captain Janeway, and I find their series rather boring.

I rather enjoyed some parts of DS9, though I thought the whole mystical theme was a slap in the face of the Star Trek Tradition.

Classical is really amusing to watch. Their attitude toward other planets rather reminds me of today's US attitude toward the rest of the world.

Finally, there is the "Enterprise" series, which is on UPN right now. I think it has a nice concept (it takes place BEFORE Classical, right when humans first venture into space), and a couple of really good actors. Unfortunately, the series is much too slow, and takes itself much too seriously. So I watched a few episodes and stopped.

Finally, the movies. I think I hate them all.

I'm a fan of the old Star Trek. My son however is VERY into Star Trek. As a matter of fact his room reflects his interest in Star Trek.

I am a Star Trek fan from way back when - the Captain Kirk and Spock days - the <em>real</em> Star Trek!! It took me quite a while to warm up to the "Next Generation" but if it had not been for Data, I probably would still be just watching reruns of the original Star Trek. I never cared for the Voyager series or the Deep Space Nine series. Captain Janeway was too "wooden." Anyway, whoever heard of a female Star ship Captain? Give me Captain Kirk or Captain Picard!!

I still love to watch the old original Star Trek even if I have seen all the episodes one hundred times. There was something unique about them. As for the new episodes - in the words of Captain Kirk:

"Beam me up Scotty."

Ladskater, Data is my favourite on that series too, by far. He's the main reason I watch it.

I haven't seen that many episodes from the original series yet, but I'm still checking them out!

I don't consider myself a Trekkie, but I am a fan.

My favorite is the classic Star Trek - my favorite episodes involved humor like 'A Piece of the Action' I haven't really been 'into' the other series, but have enjoyed TNG on occasion.

As for the Star Trek exhibit in Las Vegas, it is a MUST DO for the Trekkie and the general fan. I was put off by the expense of $25 admission for what I thought would just be a showcase of props. 3 of my friends paid the price and said it was worth every penny. They were 'beamed up' to the Enterprise and had to escape on a shuttle. It was really well done in their opinion - I'll definitely check it out the next time I'm in Vegas. Also, we had lunch at Quark's Bar & Restaurant where his Worf's cousin (also Klingon) and a Ferengi stopped to converse at our table. You could order the Wrap of Khan or a Photon Torpedo sandwich. It was really fun. It's located at the back of the casino in the Hilton which is off the Vegas strip.

My favorite is and will probably always be TNG. I watched DS9 in the beginning but it lost me after a while and I never got into any of the others. We don't have UPN anymore either so that kinda inhibits my viewing of anything ST. I loved Worf and also really enjoyed Data. Brent Spiner is such a great actor. I was also a die hard fan of getting Capt. Picard and Dr. Crusher together. And I even admit that I once had a huge crush on Wil Wheaton (Wesley)!! I also think Patrick Stewart is a brilliant actor; he can do absolutely anything. I really want to get the DVDs of TNG but they are so daggone expensive right now. I hope the price goes down sometime soon! Glad to find other ST fans here though. I have wanted to get to that ST exhibit in Vegas for years. Glad to hear it is worth it! Maybe someday.

Thanks for the tip. The actual cost of the ticket didn't bother me - it was actually the cost vs my interpretation of the value of what I would be buying. Obviously, I wasn't informed enough about the exhibit to make the correct decision.

I have trouble finding people to attend SOi or COI with. I'm totally ready to pay the $80 to $90 for the seats On Ice or in the front rows. Unfortunately, most of my friends aren't interested in spending that much on a skating show. So, I either go myself or they buy less expensive tickets while I sit elsewhere.

I watched all of the original Star Trek episodes in the 60's, and made a point to catch them when they went into syndication. I really loved the Star Trek movies, my favorite being the one where the whole crew went back into the past to bring a humpback whale into the future to save Earth. Very clever and the dialogue was "Primo".....42

I will admit to being a Star Trek fan. Never really got the chance to watch the original series when it first aired - my Dad watched the competition and his choice went. (He did let us watch things like Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, but like most people at the time, I remember alot of westerns!)

I watched TNG and DS9 and Voyager fairly faithfully in first run. I like Enterprise, but haven't seen them all. I wish they would use a little more humor, 'cuz those earthings seem much closer to Vulcans than I'd like. I guess they were going for "gritty."

DS9's spiritual drift didn't bother me. I think it was actually more realistic in that people DO have spiritual values. Made the struggles more interesting sometimes, especially Kira's attempts to reconcile her spiritual beliefs with her job in the military. Besides, all those Bajorans constantly fighting over religion certainly reflects the world as we know it. (sorry to disagree, Ptichka!)

As to the movies, Wrath of Khan is by far the best. A real plot and lots of literary allusions. I remember convincing my daughter to compare it to Tale of Two Cities when she was struggling with jr hi English. Took lots of coaxing, but she finally got that dreaded paper written!

The most enjoyable was Voyage Home (here thar be whales!). The first ST movies was awful. Lots of special effects. But the movie missed the point of the series, which is very character lead. And Shatner's directorial of #5 was really sad. Who knew Vulcan mystics and a search for God could be so boring!

And those planets reflecting the US Cold War mentality and civil rights struggles, well, it WAS the 60's after all. Gene Roddenberry always referred to ST as Wagon Train to the Stars, so it made sense to bring up hot topics that couldn't get talked about in other series. The first interracial kiss on primetime tv was on ST. I also liked the episode that had the black/white guy struggle with the white/black guy. Ended with them still fighting but their planet's population wiped out. Talk about beating people over the head to make a point!

Hi Jo,

I didn't see any of the Star Trek series in their first runs, so I'm still trying to get caught up. I've seen a few of the new Enterprise episodes, though, but I believe this week's is the last of the season (as per the ST website).

I haven't seen any of the movies yet. A friend of mine said the same thing about the first one and the special effects; I guess someday I'll see it for myself, but since all of the series except Enterprise are on every weekday, I get my choice of ST episodes to watch, and don't get enough time to watch even all the ones I do want to see.

That museum in Las Vegas sounds like a real 'must see'. If I'm ever out that way, I'll have to check it out!

The original series is my favorite. I LOVED Mr. Spock and his tormented half Vulcan/half Human psyche. The best thing about the shows was the friendship between Captain Kirk and him. My favorite of the movies was "The Wrath of Kahn" where my beloved Mr. Spock ...er...oops! better not say and spoil it for those who have yet to see it.

I was raised on the 1950's Captain Video series so when the technically advanced series Star Trek debuted in the 60's, I was overwhelmed. Then when ST-TNG debuted in the 80's and Patrick Stewart uttered those memorable words, "Where no ONE has ever gone before", I was completely blown away.

ST-DS9 didn't do much for me except re-enforce my decision not to get my ears pierced. And Voyager, it wasn't until Seven of Nine joined the cast that I thought the series got interesting.

My favorite Star Trek movies are the first and fifth, The Voyage Home. The rest did/does little or nothing at all for me.

I liked Earth - Final Conflict from the beginning. And speaking of beginning, I can't stand Enterprise because it just doesn't move.

The other scifi series I never miss is Star Gate-SG1. It's innovative with a great cast although I do wish they'd bring back Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson).

I like how the topics changed from Classical to TNG. In the Classical, Kirk and the crew always have the answers to other planets' problems. I think this reflects the Cold War mentality -- if they were more like us, they would be OK. In TNG, I liked the concept of the Prime Directive; I think this reflected a more humble US (even though it was now a Cold War winner) -- at least among the intellectuals, it was by then understood that you cannot solve all the world's problems by artificially imposing American-style systems.

Actually, the prime directive was prevalent in the original series, too.

There was one episode (if I was a full blown Trekkie, I would remember the name of the episode) which featured a young Joan Collins. She played a missionary type in 1940's America. Spock and Kirk were looking for McCoy. While Kirk was out looking, he met Edith. Spock was able to rig up a device which showed an alternative reality. Edith was supposed to die in a car accident - if she didn't die, the Nazi's would win WWII. So, instead of saving Edith. Spock prevented Kirk and McCoy from preventing her death.

Also, in 'A Piece of the Action', the Enterprise officers did interfere in a society that was living in gangland Chicago because this society had been unduly influenced by a book left behind by a previous starship. They redirected the society toward a republican government (a la US where people vote for their representatives). Unfortunately, McCoy left behind his communicator.

So, classic star trek did follow the Prime Directive, too.

4dk, I'm glad to hear that you enjoy those other shows as well. I've read a bit about them and they look interesting, but I haven't gotten around to watching them yet. I'll have to give them a try!
