Really? I'm beginning to think that it should discounted all together without affecting the first jump (he should've gotten a credit for the 3A without a deduction because it was in a combo), or something. Because that's just super disappointing.

That would be better than the current rule but still not completely fair. If a skater would have gotten 9.9 points for a 3Axel-2Toe there is no reason they should receive a deduction for instead doing a 3Axel-3Toe. It should be scored as if they had still done the 3Axel-2Toe...because they DID do it - just with an extra rotation.
 
While Gachinski has underwhelmed me before, I thought he was great here. Lots of energy and command, not to mention really spiffy jumps. He has a very good shot at the podium, rightfully so.
