Plushenko's Return

Great news indeed!

When Zhenya says he is going to do something, he does. Therefore, there was not a doubt in my mind that he would be back, as he said he would be since the beginning. I have faith, and hope.

I'm only shocked in how fast his recovery has been since the knee surgery he had this past summer. He's like superman, any of his numerous injuries & surgeries over the past decade would have seen retirement for anybody else, but not Zhenya, not Zhenya. God is with him.

Now back to the article at hand. I like what he says, especially about his secret mysterious SP, and also what he says of Elizaveta. She's going to do the 3A by Sochi, God willing of course. Just thinking about it gets me excited! Mishin does indeed know what he is doing, as all his skaters have the best technique. No downgrades, underrotations, nor wrong edge calls for them. And their 3axels are honestly the best I've ever seen ~ swoosh ~ like they're flying up to heaven. No wonder the 3A is Evgeni's money jump, he can even do it with no speed at all, or when there's no room, therefore I would love to see him do it as his very last jump, right at the end of the program. Like the way Mao did the 2A in one of her early GPs.

If any one was ever to do a 4A, my bet it would've been Zhenya, but I'm just happy he's able to skate. Truly.

That said, I have to be totally honest and say I was slightly disappointed to see Edvin Marton's name, as imho he did not do justice to Evgeni with his Olympic LP. In fact I think it cost him the gold. But on the positive side, I absolutely love & adore Evgeni's 210% devotion & loyalty to those that have been with him forever, like Mr. Mishin, whom he has never left despite cries to do so from detractors over the years. That type of character and strength says a lot about a human being, let alone a man.

The SP is what intrigues me the most and gives me hope & dreams, I've always wanted Zhenya to show the world how beautifully he skates from the inside out, the way he did with "Nijinsky"...

As a Plushenko fan, I will be thrilled if he comes back in good shape. I am afraid he is too old to be able to compete with the top men today, particularly after the surgeries. I hope he is not rushing his return; that would make it even more difficult for him to be competitive.

I was also disappointed that he will skate to Marton's music. He is capable of so much more- diffrent types of music and programs. Why is he limiting himself to Marton?

His goal is bronze medal in Sochi and probably no quad jumps. He might focus on footworks and spins and all other things that he might have missed in the past. So I think it's realistic and exciting, also admirable. Plushenko is an iron man in figure skaing!

I'm pissed off about Marton too. Why does he have to be such a great's shadow everywhere?!:disapp:

No quad for Plushenko? That's getting interesting. If he works on all other things he has missed in the past, I will become a big fan of his. He has the command. He has the speed. He is potentially artistic, simply judged by the way he moves his arm. Now he is making me excited about his comeback.

Me too, skatinginbc. While I'm not his biggest fan, I see and admire the fact that this guy is the Real Thing. He understands skating, he understands music, and he understands performance. The way he commands the ice makes skating important both as a sport and as an art. The longer he can stay in skating, the better.

I'd actually be disappointed if he didn't do his quad (although I fully understand if his body can't handle it he shouldn't). To me the competitions become interesting when you have the diverse approaches to point accrual (i.e. the jumpers vs the PCS masters). I just don't know how he'd match up with Chan or Abbot without being able to outjump them.

Plushy should forget about quads and try to improve in other areas. By the end of his carrer he can afford to do something really, really crazy, like skating only with triples, but to a nice program. I would love to see great footwork, beautiful choreography, everybody knows he can jump.

We'll see his upcoming Russian Nationals in which he will not put quad in his programs. How will he do against Gachinski and Menshov? Then we'll have better ideas.

I hope he improves other aspects of his skating besides the jumps. I know I use to enjoy his overall skating before he started doing all this flailing. He certainly has it. Otherwise I hope his score truly reflect what he puts out on the ice. No high scores for transitions that aren't really there.

Stojko did four (1992-2002)

True. But 1992 Winter Olympics and 1994 Winter Olympics were only two years apart. That was a golden opportunity for all winter athletes. If Plushenko does go to Sochi, he'll be the first male skater who has been competing at this high level for the longest time.

By the way, this Plushenko interview was dated on Oct.24, 2011. But I didn't see it anywhere on this board:

I wonder what triple jump he will do out of steps. The Lutz worked well. 3F+3T might get an "e" but maybe not at Russian nationals. All jumps done well likely to get +2 or 3 GOE and he rarely went below level 3 spin or steps and if done well all +2 or 3 GOE and his PCS would be good like 9's. Gachinski would get like 8's and maybe Menshov 7's or 8's. If they landed quad combos both Gachinski and Menshov would get a bonus and maybe they could beat him in the tech score but maybe GOE on TES could still make Plushenko the winner there.

The latest interview on Plushenko (published on Dec.6, 2011):

I used google translate to learn that he plans to compete without a quad at Russian Nationals. But still plan to insert multiple quads in international competitions.

A short program - no Vanessa Mae. But a funny and interesting music, very beautiful, deep and emotional. It consists of two parts: the first - very melodic and soulful, while the latter - very fast. Its all know, is a classic. But in the process.

So we don't know what's the SP music yet.

Once again, I'm not afraid to lose. Figure skating goes forward, I want to be with him. Anything can happen: not enough sleep, injury, something else. And I'm ready for it.

I just have had a very good teacher. For example, Elvis Stojko. When I first came to international ice, he finished his career, was four-time world champion. And in 15 years, I went to his first "Grand Prix" and just started to perform in competition quad. And then if you did a quad, you will automatically win - with a clean box, of course. So Stojko came up to me and held out his hand and wished me luck.

It was just some fantasy! Four-time world champion extended his hand to me, a young pup, knowing that he can beat him! For me it was a huge boost. I was equal to such great athletes and great people. But as time goes by, now equal to me. Hello, class. That's why I'm trying something else to do, people to remember me after 10 - 20 years. To say, Plushenko - it was a decent skater. Now some people have called me a legend, yet somehow. That is to continue to call (smiles).

That's the reason.

Isn't that amazing that all these veterans, Plushenko, Takahashi, Joubert, and Abbott, want to continue to Sochi?!

Yes - don't forget van der Perren, who became the oldest GP medalist under COP (singles), and I'm pretty sure ever of the seven GP events (six current + Bofrost)

Behold my mad Wikipedia skills: Elvis Stojko was older by a few months when he medalled at 2001 SC... and Todd Eldredge was 30. Eldredge also won a medal at that season's Lalique. Brian Boitano had just turned 30 when he won a silver at the 1993 Skate America.

Julia Sebestyen may have been the oldest ladies medalist in a GP: she was 28 when she won the bronze at 2009 SA.

ETA: Tatiana Malinina was also a 28 yeal old GP medalist - a winner, in fact!

Thanks everybody for all the latest info. on Zhenya.

So no Vanessa Mae, no problema, I'm just glad via Evgeni I found this amazing violinist! Seriously, she's in another realm all her own, to revolutionize the music industry by merging her electric violin with classical and come out with this amazing sound is truly unbelieveable. This past week has been pure bliss listening to her music (she's now on my MP3 permanently). And now I know a little bit of why Zhenya likes Edvin Marton so much ~ the violin.

Lol, and now I'm actually looking forward to what Mr. Marton has to offer for the FS. After all, he did have a hand in Evgeni's signature program ~ Tribute To Nijinsky. So I will give him the benefit of the doubt. My respect for violinists via Vanessa Mae has reached another level. :)

That said, now I'm even more curious to see Zhenya's SP. Three more weeks to go, and counting...
