Kostner considers retirement

According to some italian press, Carolina Kostner is considering retirement. Apparently the final decision is not yet taken.

This doesn't really surprise me. It makes sense that Carolina would consider retirement now. This year, she achieved everything she could have hoped for. Her winning long program at Worlds was nothing short of triumphant--to my mind, the most impressive ladies' victory at Worlds since Yu-Na Kim in 2009. Not only that, but Carolina now has a full collection of World medals--gold (2012), silver (2008), and bronze (2005), not to mention many European titles. If Carolina retires now, I think she can feel nearly complete satisfaction with her career. Yes, there were many ups and downs, but in the end she triumphed and became world champion. The only thing missing is an Olympic medal--and only she can decide if it's worth it to devote two more years of her life to that elusive goal.

It would be nice to see if she would be able to make it to the podium in Sochi but I understand that she has been competing for so long and also deserves to move on and experience other things on her career and life. I'm sure there will be demand for her in the show circuit. She has fans from all over the world that would like to see her. Besides, "Opera on Ice" (in which she is a headliner) looks great. In the end, all that matters is that she's happy. :)

Here's a link to the cinematic trailer of Opera on Ice:

Look beautiful!

A surprise to me. But either way, she's had a great career, and the show scene in Europe is pretty lively, so she'll have plenty to do as a skater even if she chooses not to compete. She might be one of those people who is spooked by the Olympics and gets more stressed than usual about the Games. If she does decide to remain in, I doubt she'd have any competition for the Italian crown, so at least she'd get to go to the Games. Well, we'll see.

I wonder if she was getting the same lack of financial support that Samuel Contesti was from the Italian federation. She has been competing forever and last year was her best year. It makes sense to retire now I think. There are so many ladies younger than her coming up and with 2 more years until Sochi, no telling what will happen. Go out on top Carolina.

after caro's problems with nerves at the last two olympics, i'd rather she go out with a world championship than risk another competitive undoing.

She has so many interests. It makes sense that this be the year she retires on top with two years to go to the olympics. just like buttle - they have lives outside of skating. I wonder about people like Baiul, Manley, and all these skaters who never got an education or their whole life was skating what happens now or after? We know the pro circuit and shows are drying up. yes, there are the skating shows on boats but they pay peanuts - most have never made it to world's except maybe some Canadians - christopher mabee and Vaughn Chipeur. Someitmes they are smurfs on ice or a tree - nothing wrong but the point is if you devote yourself to skating only so many make it. One can only be a tree or smurf so long.

I know Elizabeth Manley was a spokesperson for some diet company. I don't quite remember, but I think she does other PR work now. My sister works in PR for hockey in Ottawa and Elizabeth Manley came into their office last year for some reason or another.

Oh, I am disappointed, her last two seasons were great and she was majestically beautiful this year. I guess it has been near a decade, and she wants to go out on top. She was just so stellar this year. It was wonderful to watch how great a performer she was when she finally conquered her nerves. Caro will be missed.

Yes, I always worry about the skaters (and other athletes, especially the young girl gymnasts) who miss out completely on a real education because those are their peak career years. Oksana is definitely one whose situation troubled me for years. Tara Lipinski did really well financially, I think, but I still worried because she had no more than a high school education and seemed to be drifting for some years. With some sports, you almost have to go to college because that's where the best teams seem to be (in this country at least)--notably swimming and track. But elite level ice skating is almost cut off from school for so many skaters (thank goodness for exceptions like Davis and White), and the peak training years for girls are during high school and even middle school. (I'm talking about North America; I don't know enough about systems in other countries.)

That's why I'm so thrilled when I hear about a skater with an outside pursuit, especially if it's related to education somehow. That year when Michelle and Sarah Hughes both graduated from college, and their photos were shown in I think People magazine, I felt like dancing.

I think she would be very sensible to quit while at top.
Much easier to rake the money in shows when you are big name, rather than athlete on the decline.

I am wondering whether it has anything to do with Yu Na coming back!! Not sure?, Caro would like to remain at the top, and with Yu Na and possibly Ando coming back - she could be relegated!!

But Caro is a lovely lady and I can understand her thoughts at this present time! I would have thought that Caro has a chance to win another 2 European titles at least!! before Sochi.

She's been a wonderful skater to have around and unique in many respects. I'll miss her if she goes. I'm still so thrilled that she gets to say she is a world champion.

Nice was just a wonderfully high note of the journey in her career. The whole season was magical, as she is a magical skater all along. I for one was happy to see her overcome difficult times she had and get her sparks back like that.

I am going to miss Carolina A LOT if it's true...
But whatever decisionshe is gonna make, MY BEST WISHES FOR CAROLINA!!! :yay::yay:

This is one of MANY of my favorite skates by this magical young lady:

Carolina beautifully skating to Kanon with a huge opening 3F+3T at Tokyo Worlds in 2007, where I have so many unforgettable memories. :)

^ Oh, that's one of my favorite Carolina performances, too, deedee1!

As much as I would miss Carolina's programs, like this one and her two programs from this past season, it does seem like it might be a good time for her to leave -- go out on top and not have to think about making the two-year push til Sochi. She might really struggle to find motivation for yet another Olympics and to find anything more she really wants or needs to "say" via competition style programs.

Last season's programs were so wonderful to me, and to top it off with the WC -- I couldn't be happier for Carolina whether she retires or stays.
